Description

A detached barn conversion within 25 acres and enjoying spectacular views across the valley. A great base being only four miles from Matlock.

This detached barn conversion overlooks the village of Ashover. With a commanding position above the valley it sits in 25-acre grounds and lies adjacent to Goss Hall, the owners’ Grade II Elizabethan manor house. A truely rural location where a small flock of Gotland rare breed sheep graze in the surrounding fields, with chickens, cockerels, geese, ducks and goats all within view of the property. From the doorstep, walking and cycle trails are aplenty, with one leading to Ashover itself which uniquely has its very own downloadable audio trail, with the ability to bring the route to life. The River Amber flows through this small village which lies between Chesterfield and Matlock, and was once used for the TV drama series, ’Peak Practice’. Nearby Ogston Reservoir can be reached in around 10 minutes and provides sailing, windsurfing, trout fishing, and is also great for bird watching. The former spa town of Matlock, also around 10 minutes offers many antique shops and cafés, and Matlock Bath has its very own cable car that reaches the Heights of Abraham. The ever popular riverside market town of Bakewell, home to the magnificent historic houses of Chatsworth Estate and Haddon Hall can be reached in around ½ hour, as can Bolsover Castle. The historic market town of Chesterfield with its crooked spire is around a 20 minute journey and for any thrill seekers, the Alton Towers theme park can be reached in approximately 1 hour. Shop 2 miles, pub serving food 1 mile and restaurant 3 miles.

Ground floor: Living/dining room. Kitchen with tiled floor. Bathroom with bath, shower cubicle and toilet. First floor: 2 double bedrooms (one 6ft zip and link, can be twin).

Gas central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Travel cot. High chair. Satellite TV. Electric cooker. Microwave. Fridge/freezer. Internet connection. Shared 25-acre natural grounds. Parking (2 cars). Cycle store. Natural water supply from spring. Welcome pack. No smoking. NB: Pond, drops and low walls in grounds.

Highly recommended and would return. We were made very welcome by Rita and John. A great winter break - thank you. Rural but not far from Matlock and road network. Working farm with fantastic eggs/bacon/sausages. Ashover village is a pleasant walk via footpaths/bridleway and has a great food and real ale pub.

Friendly and helpful owners who provided home reared, delicious bacon, sausages and eggs plus Christmas tablecloth and decorations. Stunning bathroom and my daughter called it a lovely cosy cottage. Good wifi and TV. Would have found an upstairs loo handy

We had a wonderful week at Calf Close Barn. The barn was cosy and clean, beds very comfortable, beautiful bathroom and fabulous pure spring water ran from the taps. The farm setting was perfect for our young family, the children loved seeing the animals every day. The view from the farm is amazing... the local area had an abundance of breath taking landscapes to ennoy too. So much to do near by too in the way of days out and walks. A great location. And of course wonderful hosts in Rita amd John! So friendly and helpful.

Comfortable cottage in good location. Enjoyed walking down to the pub in the village (and there were three to choose from) for a meal and pub quiz. Great selection of animals to see around the cottage especially the donkeys. Good weather and lovely autumn colours made for a really enjoyable and relaxing week.

Amazing location in an great rural setting. The cottage is on a working farm. The barn felt warm and homely as well as being lovely and quaint. Our children loved going to visit the animals on the farm everyday. The owners were really friendly and helpful. Lots of nice local walks and the Black Swann pub has really good pub food and ales (no food Mondays)

The Calf Close Barn is a converted barn, first built in 1627 and then remodelled in 1891, situated next to the main farm house. As this is a working farm there are a number of animals & birds on site including cockerels, geese, hens, pigs, cows, sheep, donkeys, a goat and of course the traditional cat & farm dog! With a cockerel that pays a visit and crows his arrival in the hope of attracting some food and sheep about 10 feet away over a dry stone wall, it's not always the quietest of retreats but the farmyard noises are perfect for relaxing in this countryside location. The relative remoteness does mean that local facilities are a little further afield but Matlock town centre is just 15 mins drive away. The key part is the easy access to the fields and walks to other local villages mean the countryside has come to you and you just need to step outside your stable style front door to be in it. Just fantastic.

Rita and John were exceptionally welcoming and we enjoyed a blissful few days with them last week. Calf Close Barn is situated in a rural location and easy access to wonderful walks and pubs. great for unwinding. Yet, it is only a short & easy drive from facilities in Matlock-it doesn't involve miles of twisting lanes!! The cottage is exceptionally well appointed with everything you might need and is very tastefully decorated- it is very easy to feel at home here. The barn nestles in countryside on the edge of their small scale, traditional farm, a great opportunity to see some rare breeds up close and of course their fantastic eggs are the freshest you will have ever tasted. A real opportunity to get back to a rural life many of us left behind a generation ago. Just perfect for two or four people. Enjoy!!

Very pleasant stay at this comfortable „barn“, spacious and well equipped with all a family could need. The owners are nice and the farm is good for city kids to experience. We’ll stay again when we go to the Peak District.
