Description

Positioned by the river, woodland and surrounding fells of the unspoilt Ennerdale Valley. A truly remote location with wildlife on the doorstep.

This beautiful detached riverside cottage in the Lake District National Park is only 1 mile from the lake in the unspoilt Ennerdale Valley, with all the ingredients for a memorable holiday. Situated on a smallholding with ducks and chickens roaming freely in the grounds, you can really feel like you have escaped to paradise at this Lakeland hideaway. The sight of red squirrels feeding in the garden is a common one from the heart of this peaceful cottage. You can sit in the conservatory and watch them take monkey nuts from the squirrel feeders right outside your window. At night time the stars shine brightly on the backdrop of the dark skies thanks to there being no light pollution that you typically get in more commercialised areas.
If you want to escape to the country, this really has it all, from the peaceful trickling beck that runs along the side of the garden, to the acres of woodland and riverside walks that you can explore to your hearts content. In effect you have your own private estate on which to build your own adventure. Locally you’ll find all manner of wildlife including a good variety of birds and wild rabbits, there is birdwatching on site and ospreys and an RSPB reserve are within 12 miles. Step inside and this tastefully furnished cottage is perfect for families and couples. Sleeping up to six guests in two triple rooms it offers the flexibility to welcome larger families. The comfortable living room with large multi-fuel burner is just perfect for those cosy nights in front of a roaring fire. The owners, who live in the farmhouse next door, are very welcoming and love to involve visitors in their rural lifestyle, while the biomass heating system and solar panels all complement the eco-friendly nature of this property.
If you love the outdoors, you can enjoy any number of excellent walks and cycle routes directly from the cottage including a stunning route around Ennerdale Water which is famed for its wild and natural landscape. Just a few miles away you can access Buttermere Valley, home to Loweswater, Crummock Water and Buttermere itself which is famous for some of the most iconic imagery of the Lakes. For more challenging adventures you have any number of iconic fells in the vicinity including Red Pike, High Stile and Haystacks. If you’re missing town-life, don’t worry, you’re only 10 miles from the popular seaside town of Whitehaven with harbour, supermarkets, bars, restaurants and high street shopping. Once you have experienced Lake District living at its best, the last thing you’ll want to do is return to the hustle and bustle of today’s busy life. Beck Cottage is adjacent to the coast to coast path for walking and cycle routes and fishing and riding are just 2 miles away and Loweswater is 6 miles away. Beach 12 miles. The owners are very friendly and the cottage clean and tidy. As we have 3 children it wasn’t ideal having the bathroom downstairs especially at night if one of them wanted the loo. It’s also very remote which is great for walkers and bike lovers but not so good for a young family. We got unlucky with the weather as it rained every day so spent at least an hour and a half in the car every morning having to find something to do as there’s nothing local for young children.

Great location for walking the Western fells. Buttermere within an easy 30 min drive and fast road to Keswick. Cottage has a sheltered enclosed garden with a beck and conservatory in case of bad weather. Owners live next door- very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Would happily book again - cottage was nicer than I expected. View only of sheltered garden, birds and ducks.

Let me start not with the wonderful cottage but with the wonderful hosts. They are the friendliest, most helpful and knowledgeable hosts you could wish for. Nothing is too much to ask and they will go out of their way to help you, truly wonderful people. Now the cottage which is well equipped with everything you will need for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is well equipped, the bathroom has a lovely hot shower and the two bedrooms are very spacious both sleeping 3 people (one room with a double and single the other with three singles). From the conservatory you can watch a range of birds (finches, tits, redpoll etc) as well as red squirrels. At one point we sat no more than a metre away from a squirrel eating nuts. The cottage is located in a lovely quiet location with Ennerdale Water a mile or two away and other locations such as Buttermere, Whitehaven etc only a short drive away. Having travelled widely I have always had a rule never to visit the same place twice but this is a rule I will be breaking for only the second time as we will certainly be returning. Get away from the hussle and bustle of life and modern distractions and spend some quality time together at Beck Cottage, our teenage sons loved it. It's the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries but has access to walking, climbing and cycling for those seeking the great outdoors.
