Minutes from Lake Ullswater

Barton Hall Farm can be found just outside Pooley Bridge, the village at the outfall of Lake Ullswater. Set in the countryside on a traditional working farm, this area offers some of the most wonderful landscapes in the region from the privacy of a secluded rural setting. It is minutes from Lake Ullswater, with its walking, water sports and ponderous steamers making their regal-like journeys up and down the lake in the shadow of the majestic fells. This area offers many forms of recreation, whatever season you choose to visit. All three cottages have been tastefully converted from original old stone farm buildings; and wherever possible the original features have been retained. Old pitch pine beams stretch unhindered through bedrooms and across stairways and the local slate and sandstone are in evidence throughout. Guests are welcomed with fresh flowers, along with well furnished comfortable holiday accommodation, wood-burning stoves and well-equipped kitchens. For good walking, fells nearby include High Street range, 1 mile, and Helvellyn, 10 miles. The market town of Penrith, 5 miles; whilst the attractions of Keswick are 14 miles. Shops, pubs and restaurants ½ mile.

Mill Moor is a very pleasant 4 bed cottage on a working farm. Located less than a mile from the centre of Pooley Bridge with views of Helvellyn and the surrounding fells, it is a great base to explore the area. The double beds were very comfortable, though the user of one of the single beds, felt it was less so, this is a very subjective area however. The cottage had plenty of hot water, was warm and comfortable. Surrounded by open fields full of Sheep and cattle it is very peaceful. The property has garden shared with two other smaller, attached cottages. It is dog friendly. Though dogs must be kept on leads in the courtyard, they are free to roam in the garden. Pooley bridge has a number of eating establishments, we enjoyed the Pooley Bridge Inn which has decent pub food. 'The Sun' is also decent. For afternoon drinks, we enjoyed 'The Secret garden' hidden away behind the village stores, with an outlook over the river. There are some great walks nearby, from the 20 mile "Ullswater way" to the Dalemain loop of 6 miles, to the trek up over Place Fell or Helvellyn and to Aire Force waterfalls, the scenery will not disappoint. Certainly an area we would visit again.
