Description

A perfect getaway for couples, this timber cottage is located amid stunning scenery in a village filmed for Monarch of the Glen and Outlander.

In a romantic setting amid stunning scenery, made famous by the BBC’s Monarch of the Glen TV series, these two architect-designed, timber clad, adjoining properties (Baltinna West UTY and Baltinna East SGGW) make a truly tranquil holiday retreat. They can be booked individually or together for two couples, and are set within an enclosed garden, each with its own private sitting-out area. Oozing character and warmth, each have their own charms and both benefit from cosy wood-burning stoves in the living room and sheepskin rugs on oak floors. Nestling between the Cairngorm and Monadhliath mountain ranges, Newtonmore is situated in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park, a walker’s and birdwatcher’s paradise. Outdoor pursuits found locally include 7 golf courses, fishing on the River Spey, mountain biking, skiing, tours taking in distilleries, RSPB sites, interactive museums, and the towns of Aviemore and Inverness. Shops ¼ mile. Pubs serving very good food within 1 mile. Excellent restaurants locally. In a romantic setting amid stunning scenery, made famous by the BBC’s Monarch of the Glen and Outlander TV series, these two architect-designed, timber clad, adjoining properties (Baltinna West UTY and Baltinna East SGGW) make a truly tranquil holiday retreat. The best recommendation is to say that if we stay in the area again, we wouldn't hesitate to go back. Bottle of milk awaiting our arrival in the fridge was most welcome for a cup of tea after a long drive.

Overall an excellent stay. Only got some lower ratings because we found the mattress uncomfortable. Nothing wrong with it as such but just way too firm for us. Also think the seating downstairs could be a bit more comfortable as well. Newtonmore as a location was alright. Good base for walking. Not many dog friendly pubs around either but that's our fault for not really looking into that part of it. Overall we had a great stay! Would come again if there was a softer mattress!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for your feedback and delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I'm afraid we know you can’t please all of the people all of the time with firmness of bed, so we have a medium firmness, high quality mattress, plus a soft mattress topper, to again try to make as many people happy as possible. The mattress is only six months old as we put in a new kingsize bed in in March 2019. Re dog friendly places I think the area is pretty good and we have so many returning guests who bring their dogs here for that reason; you can take dogs into The Wildflour cafe in the centre of the village, and also for a bar meal at the Balavil shinty bar back bar and the Braeriach pub. In Kingussie 3 miles away the McInnes House hotel welcomes dogs in the bar where you can eat, and at nearby Loch Insh Boat House you can also eat in the bar all day/evenings which is dog friendly. Plus plenty of other places like The Pine Marten bar at Loch Morlich which is another popular walking spot at the beach for our regulars. For a small village I think that's probably above average, though as dog owners ourselves we wish everywhere welcomed pets.

Fab place to say the house is super clean really well equipped the kitchen has all the bits and bobs you need. We had our dog with us and it was so nice to have a secure garden to use and for him to have plenty of space inside. Newtonmore doesn't have a huge amount going on but does have a supermarket you definitely need a car to get out and about and explore all the fab places in the highlands. The cottage is a great base for exploring.

Not for all elderly and people that need a toilet break during the night you have to go down a tricky staircase also if you want to be an exhibitionist this is for you lie in bed and the house next door can look straight in so not brilliant .which is cleverly not shown in the images also heater in bedroom does not work and the heating is all off during the night so we needed extra covers the microwave is on its way out and will not always switch on . The bed linen is in need of replacement and totally new pillows needed and the ones provided in the wardrobe and on the bed would not support anything and in hotel management terms are ear warmers so we had to use cushions the settee is the most uncomfortable and I would suggest a good sofa bed would solve lots of issues

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I am baffled and disappointed by this review, given our usual very high scores. Firstly, if a guest has mobility issues then it is best to book a holiday home that addresses their needs and checks it is suitable for them; Baltinna East is advertised as the following; "Partially open, double-height living room with wood-burning stove and rugs on oak floor, open-plan with modern kitchen/dining area and drying room with pulley. Fully tiled wet room with body jet shower and toilet. First floor: Spacious beamed double bedroom with large windows and wash hand basin." The staircase isn’t tricky it is perfectly normal and not steep or anything unusual, there are 12 wide stairs with a handrail and it is well lit, however guests can get an idea of the type it is by viewing it on the photos. We left a welcome letter as usual saying that we are nearby if there are any issues; no-one has ever mentioned the microwave, if there are any maintenance issues we always address them immediately. Same with the radiator - why not let us know during your stay if something was wrong, having checked it we can find no problem. Mostly guests comment as you can see below how cosy the place is ,there is also a wood burning stove, often not used as its too warm. I note that the fire was still laid as I had set it for your welcome; as the bedroom is a mezzanine floor, plus the flue passes right through the bedroom had you have been cold at all you could have lit the fire in the evening and it would have warmed the upstairs all night; as I said, something no-one normally does as it is so cosy. The thermostat is set to go down a couple of degrees at night for guests comfort - again, something that you only had to call us about if you would have liked it tweaked. Our bedlinen is beautiful and always something we take pride in, only buying the best, so I am staggered by that comment. We leave a long bolster pillow plus two pillows on the bed, plus two spare pillows with protectors and cases in a zipped transparent case in the wardrobe - we would be hard pressed to give guests more options. Whilst we know you can’t please all of the people all of the time with firmness of bed, we have a medium high quality mattress plus a soft mattress topper, to again try to make as many people happy as possible. I have no idea how a sofa-bed would help. Unless you mean you need to sleep downstairs near the toilet. The windows you refer to all have blinds as is clearly shown in the photos, this would have surely been mentioned in other comments if this wasn’t the case. I’m very sorry you didn’t find Baltinna suitable for your needs, and as an owner that goes the extra mile and takes huge pride in their property, I’m very saddened to read this review, in such stark contrast to our usual feedback.
