This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Explore the wild beauty of Dartmoor and its fantastic walking opportunities only 20 minutes away from this fantastic house.

Set in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a quiet, beautiful valley filled with things to do and a short drive from the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. Enjoy walking around the estate’s hills and woodlands, swim in the heated indoor swimming pool, or relax in the sauna at Woodhouse Farm while children play in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. Both The Cider Barn, a mile away and sleeping 16, and Nut Tree Farm, sleeping 28, have their own outdoor swimming pools for the summer.
The cottages are both comfortable and practical, with a wide range of Devon attractions right on the doorstep. All are maintained to very high standards with leather sofas, Wi-Fi, flatscreen digital TVs and very comfortable beds. Many retain original features, including oak beamed ceilings, and all have either Italian-tiled or wooden floors.
Sleeping from 4 to 28 people, and rated either 4 or 5 stars, the cottages can accommodate almost any party size, and an in-house chef (arranged direct with the owner) can be booked to take care of the catering.
The brilliant Ashcombe Adventure Centre for outdoor activities, is just under a mile down the lane. Available at extra cost for those 14 years and over, it offers quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintballing and more. Also located on the estate is ’A Touch of the Wild’, a camp-based forest activity club. Children can take part in bush-craft courses and activities ranging from camp fire cooking and toasting marshmallows to bug hunting and learning woodland skills - a day with the experienced staff will ensure youngsters come away with a new found love of the great outdoors. The Ashcombe Village Club opens on various evenings providing cheap beer in a cheerful atmosphere, event evenings, traditional summer fêtes and shows.
Both Dartmoor National Park and the historic city of Exeter are only a 20-minute drive away, while the famous South Devon Coast, with wonderful sandy beaches, is barely 3 miles. Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, several golf courses, loads of family theme parks, zoos, sailing and fishing are all within easy reach, not to mention the many excellent pubs and restaurants that Devon is famous for. Walk in the wild beauty of Dartmoor with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes, or visit the numerous nearby National Trust properties including Agatha Christie’s house, Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques and brilliant Regatta Week and Air Show. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and water sports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham. Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive.
All in all Ashcombe is an excellent base from which to explore, experience and enjoy ‘The Cream of Devon’. All big supermarkets deliver direct to your cottage. Main shops 3 miles.

The Cider Barn is accessed via a long, steep, winding, uphill drive through the original apple orchard. The building and garden both overlook the scenic Ashcombe Valley and all the way to the south Devon coast. The property benefits from total privacy and is ideal for groups and extended families, and has its own exclusive use of a heated outdoor swimming pool. Tucked away at the bottom of the drive lies Apple Tree Cottage (ref HKH) which can provide accommodation for an extra 6 guests. 1 mile from Woodhouse Farm. We had a great stay at the Cider Barn in a group of 15 people. The area is beautiful and the views were quite stunning. Facilities and equipment were good especially two dishwashers and two cookers. The lounge area was roomy and it meant that the whole group could sit in one room. The dining area also allowed plenty of room for all of us. The only slight problem was understanding the oven temperatures as these were not clear. Some of the bedrooms were quite small but this was not a problem.

Fabulous location. Lovely house but some bedrooms very small. Lot of family living space and safe play space for children. Well equipped but lack of instructions for cooker. Lot to do in area.

Everyone in our family group enjoyed the stay. There was plenty of seating in lounge ( often we find not enough comfy seats for all to sit together). The heated pool was great hit and used every day with such a stunning view from garden! The facilities of large pool, sauna, games room, and children's play area were also good fun for all. The log stove helped make the lounge cosy at night. Set in a lovely area we would recommend the cottage to our friends.

I was a little disappointed to find I had no single room and had to share with my sister in a room with no toilet. My mother who is 81 and wheelchair bound had to have a room with only a tiny toilet so also had to use the outside toilet. there were a few cobwebs but understand theses can come over night, also one shower was very dirty and the toilet outside the rooms was broken. we thought there was a games room with pool table but not, and swimming pool was tiny, it was a bad single track road to main shops which was a long drive to anywhere walking was limited. I think it would suit a young active crowd, we enjoyed our stay but I doubt would stay again.

A lovely cottage for our family from the age 1 to 81 old . the only thing that let it down was the cleaning, cobwebs everywhere through the house. The bathrooms are in need a make over. A few sun lounges wouldn't go a miss.

Good quiet, private location and good to have pool. Good layout of rooms and facilities. Bathrooms could do with a refurb and more attention to cleaning would not go amiss

Lovely house, gorgeous views, great pool. Sadly the bathrooms let it down - need renovating. No hairdryer - would have been useful to know before we arrived!

Very peaceful location. Kitted out to a high standard originally, but some updates now required. Just right for what we wanted.

Very well equipped for an extended family holiday. Spacious, homely, remote (it did not matter how much noise we made), very comfortable.

As a group with learning disabilities... two struggled with steps to the kitchen, three with the gradient of the outside ramp, plus no drinking water in all the bathrooms could be a problem for some of our other residents should they use cider barn in future, that said it is an Amazing property. Thank you so much

Location more suited to activity holiday than a more mixed thing. The cottage is great. The little swimming pool was great for the kids. Everything would have been different if Devon had not had so much rain - the ground was absolutely sodden everywhere, which reduced our options a lot.

The perfect venue for large family group. Shame about the very squeaky metal framed beds in the downstairs bedrooms. Every time you move or turn over, the squeaking wakes you up. The double needs repairing. Great caterer, highly recommend
