This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Columbia simply has something to suit everyone’s tastes as there are plenty of facilities in the estate and beautiful walks nearby.

Set in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a quiet, beautiful valley filled with things to do and a short drive from the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. Enjoy walking around the estate’s hills and woodlands, swim in the heated indoor swimming pool, or relax in the sauna at Woodhouse Farm while children play in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. Both The Cider Barn, a mile away and sleeping 16, and Nut Tree Farm, sleeping 28, have their own outdoor swimming pools for the summer.
The cottages are both comfortable and practical, with a wide range of Devon attractions right on the doorstep. All are maintained to very high standards with leather sofas, Wi-Fi, flatscreen digital TVs and very comfortable beds. Many retain original features, including oak beamed ceilings, and all have either Italian-tiled or wooden floors.
Sleeping from 4 to 28 people, and rated either 4 or 5 stars, the cottages can accommodate almost any party size, and an in-house chef (arranged direct with the owner) can be booked to take care of the catering.
The brilliant Ashcombe Adventure Centre for outdoor activities, is just under a mile down the lane. Available at extra cost for those 14 years and over, it offers quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintballing and more. Also located on the estate is ’A Touch of the Wild’, a camp-based forest activity club. Children can take part in bush-craft courses and activities ranging from camp fire cooking and toasting marshmallows to bug hunting and learning woodland skills - a day with the experienced staff will ensure youngsters come away with a new found love of the great outdoors. The Ashcombe Village Club opens on various evenings providing cheap beer in a cheerful atmosphere, event evenings, traditional summer fêtes and shows.
Both Dartmoor National Park and the historic city of Exeter are only a 20-minute drive away, while the famous South Devon Coast, with wonderful sandy beaches, is barely 3 miles. Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, several golf courses, loads of family theme parks, zoos, sailing and fishing are all within easy reach, not to mention the many excellent pubs and restaurants that Devon is famous for. Walk in the wild beauty of Dartmoor with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes, or visit the numerous nearby National Trust properties including Agatha Christie’s house, Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques and brilliant Regatta Week and Air Show. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and water sports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham. Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive.
All in all Ashcombe is an excellent base from which to explore, experience and enjoy ‘The Cream of Devon’. All big supermarkets deliver direct to your cottage. Main shops 3 miles.

Columbia was converted from the Woodhouse Farm milling barn and two of the bedrooms are located in a unique round part of the building, once used for milling wheat with horses. The building overlooks the old farm courtyard and is designed to be a peaceful place for a group to enjoy their stay in Devon. The Woodhouse Farm indoor swimming pool is across the courtyard. Small flight of steps to entrance into open-plan living room with elec ‘wood burner’/pine kitchen with elec range cooker, leading to large dining room with table seating 16. Beams throughout and with rugs on Italian-tiled floor. First floor: Landing with two doors to patio (one south-facing). Large double bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet. Double bedroom with additional single bed (for +1) and adjacent bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Double bedroom and twin bedroom with shared bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Had a absolutely wonderful time at Columbia, cottage is spacious with everything you could possibly need, just right for a large family party. Would highly recommend staying here, swimming pool is lovely, great playroom for kids, views stunning.

It was absolutely perfect in all of the above aspects. It was very well equipped and comfortable and even for a large party it was still very spacious. The pool was lovely as was the sauna... we couldn't find the hot tub as stated in the black book but it didn't bother us. It was a wonderful January blues escape for all of us and great value for money, looking to return same time next year :)

The cottage is nice and well off the beaten track. It is not however very "old people" friendly with steps and fierce staircases all over. The lounge and dining areas are tiled and this gives a cold, less than cosy atmosphere. The bedrooms and bathrooms are good and the one bedroom with a tree as a roof timber is spectacular. The swimming pool and sauna is great, my grandchildren loved to swim at every opportunity. The wildlife in the immediate area is lovely with pheasant, rabbits and squirrel everywhere The venue badly needs a downstairs loo, also the lighting in the lounge is inadequate. I said no to using again, only because I have experienced better for better price, Ipplepen a good example.

Overall a lovely big cottage but could do with an update downstairs. We have stayed at Ashcombe cottages 5 times over the last few years and have always had a fantastic time. The indoor pool and play areas are brilliant! Great place to go with family or friends. So nice and easy to check in and check out with no fuss. We will definitely be coming back.

Columbia was a spacious well equipped holiday cottage for a large family group including 2 toddlers. It was a little well worn but comfortable enough . Lots of steps inside and outside to be aware of and low ceilings for the taller men in our group ! Although bathroom facilities were excellent , it would have been helpful to have had a downstairs toilet

For the money paid disappointed with the cleanliness ie cob webs, dead flies, grubby floors & carpets. Grand daughtets knee was cut on the first day because of a shard of glass embedded in lounge rug from previous rental. Some areas very tired which if updated would make a vast improvement. On the positive the columbia was well equipped, bedroms and bathrooms where clean and comfortable and the pool and play area occupied the kids for hours. Although we scored 5 - 6 in most areas it would not take to much to raise the scores.

Great holiday! Apart from the few steps in living room/kitchen it worked very well having kids there with the out door and indoor play areas and pool on site. A bit noisy for any going to bed earlier as no doors between living room/kitchen/dining room but would definitely stay again!

Although nice and clean the interior was a bit 'tired'. In particular I found the mattress the most uncomfortable I've ever slept on. This resulted in a very bad night's asleep, every night, waking up with a painful stiff back every morning!
