Description

Columbia simply has something to suit everyone’s tastes as there are plenty of facilities in the estate and beautiful walks nearby.

Columbia was converted from the Woodhouse Farm milling barn and two of the bedrooms are located in a unique round part of the building, once used for milling wheat with horses. Small flight of steps to entrance into open-plan living room with elec ‘wood burner’/pine kitchen with elec range cooker, leading to large dining room with table seating 16. Beams throughout and with rugs on Italian-tiled floor. First floor: Landing with two doors to patio (one south-facing). Large double bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet. Double bedroom with additional single bed (for +1) and adjacent bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Double bedroom and twin bedroom with shared bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Set in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a quiet, beautiful valley filled with things to do and a short drive from the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. Enjoy walking around the estate’s hills and woodlands, swim in the heated indoor swimming pool, or relax in the sauna at Woodhouse Farm while children play in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. Both The Cider Barn, a mile away and sleeping 16, and Nut Tree Farm, sleeping 28, have their own outdoor swimming pools for the summer.
The cottages are both comfortable and practical, with a wide range of Devon attractions right on the doorstep. All are maintained to very high standards with leather sofas, Wi-Fi, flatscreen digital TVs and very comfortable beds. Many retain original features, including oak beamed ceilings, and all have either Italian-tiled or wooden floors.
Sleeping from 4 to 22 people, and rated either 4 or 5 stars, the cottages can accommodate almost any party size, and an in-house chef (arranged direct with the owner) can be booked to take care of the catering.
The brilliant Ashcombe Adventure Centre for outdoor activities, is just under a mile down the lane. Available at extra cost for those 14 years and over, it offers quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintballing and more. Also located on the estate is ’A Touch of the Wild’, a camp-based forest activity club. Children can take part in bush-craft courses and activities ranging from camp fire cooking and toasting marshmallows to bug hunting and learning woodland skills - a day with the experienced staff will ensure youngsters come away with a new found love of the great outdoors. The Ashcombe Village Club opens on various evenings providing cheap beer in a cheerful atmosphere, event evenings, traditional summer fêtes and shows.
Both Dartmoor National Park and the historic city of Exeter are only a 20-minute drive away, while the famous South Devon Coast, with wonderful sandy beaches, is barely 3 miles. Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, several golf courses, loads of family theme parks, zoos, sailing and fishing are all within easy reach, not to mention the many excellent pubs and restaurants that Devon is famous for. Walk in the wild beauty of Dartmoor with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes, or visit the numerous nearby National Trust properties including Agatha Christie’s house, Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques and brilliant Regatta Week and Air Show. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and water sports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham. Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive.
All in all Ashcombe is an excellent base from which to explore, experience and enjoy ‘The Cream of Devon’. All big supermarkets deliver direct to your cottage. Main shops 3 miles.

A bit isolated, up some steep and narrow country lanes, but then it is a converted farm! Stunning views, great pool house, most bedrooms a great size with super comfortable beds, needs a little tlc in terms of décor (cracked floor slabs, dated kitchen, bathrooms dont have windows so don't get any natural air circulating, very steep stairs), but generally it's a lovely property set in beautiful grounds, incredibly peaceful. Staff that we met couldn't have wanted to help us more. Very pleased that the local supermarket (we used Tesco) delivery drivers can find it without directions - use the directions - they seem longwinded when you first read them, but trust me they are accurate! We were a group of 14 enjoying a weekend break in September. Only complaint - no salt and pepper - not bad if that's the only complaint!

The property wasn't clean enough and all the lounge needs updating the carpets very very dirty dusty. The entrance in between kitchen and dinning rooms doesn't meet the safety requirements at all. My son knock his head couple of time and start having headaches. The cottage needs a lots of update for the amount of money I've paid for this holidays is not worthy

We enjoyed a birthday weekend with friends and family. The cottage was spacious and clean with good equipment. Bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious, comfortable and clean. Cots are provided However guests should be aware of the many steps up to the property, between the down stairs living areas, spiral wooden steps to the bedrooms, and the fact that there is no downstairs toilet. We managed the stairs but it could be a problem for some. The cottage is reached by narrow country roads and it is a drive to the nearer shop. We managed for a weekend but it would have meant driving if we had stayed longer. There is a lack of toilet paper in the cottage. One roll between shared bathrooms isn't adequate.

Really great facilities for families with children - we loved the pool, pool room, and kids playground and playroom. We also had a great time at the nearby adventure centre.

Beautiful location spacious and reasonably equipped. Could do with update and tlc (bbq, bath mats need to be rubber not plastic, kitchen units, larger TV for size of room, cleaning of pool and re grouting of tiles, extractor not working in bathroom or kitchen) Some issues whilst there dealt with fairly quickly by maintenance team (broken cooker, radiator, leaking shower) Overall we had a wonderful time suited all 16 of us There were 2 cots and 3 high chairs more than stated in booking so a bonus. Would recommend as could not find a more beautiful place, peaceful and quiet, and relaxing break. Would recommend supermarket delivery of foods from Tesco and Sainsbury’s get the right post code

This is a return visit to Columbia. We did enjoy ourselves immensely but the accommodation was a little disappointing. It seemed a somewhat run down since last time. We had a fault with a shower which was repaired, but also reported a dishwasher problem and a pay phone problem, neither of which were resolved. The fan oven was very noisy and not very efficient. However on the plus side the cots and high chairs were provided as requested and we would consider returning as it is such a good size for our family

It was absolutely perfect in all of the above aspects. It was very well equipped and comfortable and even for a large party it was still very spacious. The pool was lovely as was the sauna... we couldn't find the hot tub as stated in the black book but it didn't bother us. It was a wonderful January blues escape for all of us and great value for money, looking to return same time next year :)
