"Idyllically set on a 3000-acre estate..."

Enjoying an idyllic situation on the 3000-acre Crofts Estate, surrounded by the Galloway Hills, these holiday cottages have enviable, dramatic views towards the Solway Firth and Cumbrian Hills beyond. Accessed along a private drive, and adjoining a cluster of well-maintained estate buildings, Stable Cottage (ref UUD) makes a romantic hideaway for two, offering stylishly furnished accommodation – its walls adorned with the original work of various Scottish artists. The larger Victorian detached Gardener’s Cottage (ref UXT) has been elegantly furnished, and features an attractive shared garden with a bridge over a burn and a small waterfall. Arkland Mill (ref STTZ) stands detached with a lovely large garden, a summerhouse and its own bridge over the stream. Marwhin House (SWWR) and Marwhin Cottage (ref SWWS) also stand detached, situated within 25 yards of each other, still with there own privacy, the latter two properties being set in gardens with a delightful stream and pond. Woodland walks and hillside trails radiate from the doorstep. Dumfries lies just 12 miles away, where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and museums, as well as a good theatre. Castle Douglas (8 miles) is a traditional market town with individual shops specialising in food and local produce. There are many beautiful beaches within easy reach along the Solway, and the National Trust Threave Gardens, 8 miles, makes for an interesting day out. Other tourist attractions in the area include the Galloway Kite Trail, the Galloway Forest Park and golf courses and museums in Dumfries. Village shop and pub within 4 miles.

This was our second visit to this lovely cottage and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a 'getaway from it all' holiday. The house is comfortable, warm and cosy. No wi-fi was a small issue but cant really be helped due to the location. Basic facilities could definitely be improved for a very small cost.

Fab holiday home, 4 adults and 2 children on this visit, all couldn't believe how spacious and comfortable it was. Lovely location secluded and relaxing with much wildlife about and so many places to visit as a family within an hours drive. Lots of nooks and crannies for the kids to hide in, even carried on building a den in the garden someone had started. lovely being able to walk about in the grounds. Although we had to be aware of dog poo that previous occupants did not dispose of in certain areas the garden! Other than that it was fabulous!

Our holiday party consisted of four adults and one five week old baby. We were pleasantly surprised by the property, we all feel that the photographs do not do it the justice it deserves. It was comfortable and well equipped. The only equipment I would add would be a clothes airer for drying clothes indoors on wet days. Unfortunately the water filter was not working during our stay which made interesting work of feeding and bathing the baby but it did not spoil the holiday for us. The location is really peaceful but close enough to be able to reach a supermarket and a take away! Touring the area was fun. We usually visit the area twice a year to go walking but one of our party had just had a quite major surgery and this ruled out walking. We still found entertainment in the area every day to keep us happy. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family.

This is very much an upmarket cottage, beautifully furnished and equipped to a high standard. Best of all, it doesn't matter what the weather throws at you, in our case Storm Ali, you will be comfortable in Arkland Mill with the Aga, full central heating and a wood burning stove. Situated on a 3,300 country estate you are free to roam from the front door, or simply enjoy the garden with a stream running through it ( be aware if you have small children), lawns, a summer house and barbecue. Just a few miles from Castle Douglas for shopping, Dumfries, Kirkcudbright and Kippford are within 30 mins. drive. Lots of other places to visit in area. We will be returning, maybe as soon as November. Thanks to Margaret for organising clearance of the trees brought down on the approach road during the Storm!

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your review and for staying with us at the Arkland Mill, we are disappointed to hear that the cleaning and maintenance were not up to your standards. If we were contacted at the time, we would have happily come down to resolve anything that weren’t up to your standards.
