Montacute House, Somerset

Montacute House, Somerset

Montacute House in Somerset, makes its comeback as Greenwich Palace, the principal London residence of Henry VIII and the location where Anne Boleyn was apprehended in Wolf Hall. In the initial series, the sprawling grounds of this Elizabethan estate served as a stunning setting for jousting sequences and accommodated the impressive Royal tent. In The Mirror and the Light, Montacute's tapestries from the 15th century encircle an increasingly frail, gout-afflicted Henry VIII.

Built in the late 16th century, the house boasts a beautiful facade with intricate stone carvings and a picturesque garden. Inside, you can explore the grand rooms filled with period furniture, artwork, and tapestries. The house is surrounded by expansive grounds that offer lovely walks and views of the surrounding countryside.

Great Chalfield Manor and Garden, Wiltshire

This Wiltshire manor was built between 1465 and 1480 for Thomas Tropenell and is regarded as an excellent representation of a medieval manor house. It stands in as Austin Friars, Thomas Cromwell's home. Constructed in the classic English Gothic style, the residence boasts a unique moat that encircles the estate. Another notable feature of Great Chalfield Manor is its gardens, which are beautifully maintained and include a kitchen garden, an orchard, and several vibrant flower beds.

Barrington Court

Barrington Court, Somerset

Vacant of furnishings and collections, the expansive interiors of Barrington Court were transformed into the dramatic York Place, residence of Cardinal Wolsey, who was both mentor and friend to Cromwell.

Rescued from decay and renovated by the Lyle family in the 1920s, this manor house boasts a wood-panelled Long Gallery that served as an area for indoor recreation during Tudor times. One of the highlights of Barrington Court is its beautiful walled garden, which has been restored to its former glory. Wander through the maze of pathways, admire the vibrant flower beds, and relax on one of the benches dotted throughout the garden, in the idyllic Somerset countryside.

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire

The outside of Lacock Abbey serves as the location for Wolf Hall, representing the residence of the Seymour family in the television series. Established in the 13th century as an Augustinian convent, Henry VIII transferred ownership of the abbey to Sir William Sharington, one of his courtiers, who transformed it into a private home after the monasteries were disbanded.

Originally founded in the 13th century as an Augustinian nunnery, the abbey was later converted into a country house following the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. The abbey is known for its stunning architecture, including a medieval cloister and chapter house, as well as its beautiful gardens and grounds. The abbey has also been used as a filming location for numerous films and television shows, including Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Downton Abbey.

Chastleton House, Oxfordshire

Chastleton House, Oxfordshire

Chastleton's quaint stone courtyard served as the backdrop for the poignant moments depicting Cromwell's troubled childhood in Putney. The interiors of Chastleton embody Wolf Hall, the ancestral home of the Seymour family.

Built between 1607 and 1612 by a wealthy wool merchant, the house is a well-preserved example of Jacobean architecture and is known for its unique interior, which has remained largely unchanged since the 17th century.

This Oxfordshire house was built for wealthy lawyers of the time, the Wheate family, and has been passed down through generations before being acquired by the National Trust in 1991. The interiors of Chastleton House feature intricate plasterwork, original furniture, and a collection of historic tapestries and artwork. The house also boasts a stunning walled garden, parkland, and a series of outbuildings.
