Stroll around the castles kitchen garden, or enjoy waymarked trails through the surrounding parkland, where swallows, fieldfares and redwings can be spotted. Alford, with its butchers, bakers, pubs and restaurants can be reached in an easy 15 minutes by car. Visit Alford Heritage Centre, which contains displays on village and farm life from the past. Most of the area is agricultural, and wildlife is abundant. Red squirrels and roe deer are a common sight in the woods, the elusive wildcat is present but rarely seen. Crathes Castle is less than 20 miles away and Aberdeen can be reached in 40 minutes’ drive. Pennan Lodge again has marvellous views of Pennan itself and the bay beyond. In addition to the amazing marine life, just round the corner and visible from the cottages is Troup Head, a renowned nature reserve featuring the only UK mainland colony of gannets. Next door is Cullykhan Beach, another secluded cove reached by a steep walk down to the shore. Pennan is renowned for its famous phone box as featured in the film ’Local Hero’ but it is a lovely village in its own right, typical of those strung out along this rugged coastline, including Crovie and Gardenstown, reached by steep winding roads to the bottom of the cliffs from which they cling.     Finzean, meaning ’the fair place’ in Gaelic, is very beautiful and has been the home of the Farquharson family for 400 years, including the twelfth Laird, Joseph Farquharson R.A., who loved this place, and made it known in artistic circles all over the world. The estate also boasts a lovely farm shop and café where visitors can enjoy homemade cakes and tea. A diverse range of activities including walking, birdwatching, and cycling are all available.

    The Kennels is a charming, holiday cottage providing excellent accommodation for four people. The Kennels is situated at the end of a private road on the Finzean Estate. It has spectacular, uninterrupted views across the Feugh valley to Clachnaben.

Within walking distance of the village is a wonderful marina. The beach stretches for three miles around St Combs in one direction and Faserburgh in the other. Along this stretch of coastline boast golden sands and impressive dunes, and are ideal for wildlife lovers, in fact south of St Combs is what has been described as one of the best stretches of sand dune and beach in the country, extending ten miles past Rattray Head to Peterhead. Visit Strathbeg Nature Reserve with its RSPB visitor centre or explore the other villages along this sandy stretch of coastline to Pennan, the setting of the film ’Local Hero’. Inverallochy itself also boasts a charming golf course, a beautiful links golf course and many other hidden treasures. Whether you enjoy challenging activities like windsurfing, or prefer relaxing walks, this area has something for everyone.
