Description

In glorious rural surroundings, pet friendly cottage ideal for larger groups, with footpath across miles of open countryside close by.

This attractive detached house set in the owner’s grounds provide spacious holiday accommodation situated at the end of a mile-long lane in glorious rural surroundings. Pet friendly and offering a plethora of walks on the doorstep, the cottage offers good quality linen and towels and a superb self catering base. There is a public footpath leading off the owner’s drive providing miles of walks across open countryside. A trip to picturesque Rye enables visitors to sample local foods at the Wednesday morning farmers market which is held at Strand Quay. By taking a stroll along the cobbled streets, there is also the chance to buy a memento from one of the many independently-owned shops and boutiques, art galleries and potteries - or even start Christmas shopping from the wide selection of goods available! Also worth a visit are Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Camber Sands and Camber Castle – this area of saltmarsh protects some very special wildlife, and footpaths lead to four birdwatching hides. The picturesque market town of Battle makes for an enjoyable day out, as well as Hastings, the Sealife Centre and Pevensey Castle (where the Romans invaded). The area is also well known for its local vineyards including Chapel Down and Sedlescombe. A trip to Tenterden - often referred to as the Jewel of the Weald - is an alternative and, for garden lovers, Sissinghurst (NT) is not to be missed. Further National Trust places to visit include Smallhythe Place, Scotney Castle and Bodiam Castle. Day trips to France are possible with the Channel Tunnel a mere 30-minute drive. An excellent sky venue for astrology, photography, or just wishing on a star. Shops 1½ miles, pub 1 mile.

We visited as an extended family of ten for my husbands 40th birthday and had such a lovely stay. With 4 children between the ages of 10 and 15 in our party the games room and surrounding grounds were a huge plus and the whole family enjoyed games of 'killer pool' which was great fun if a little competitive! The cottage was clean, comfortable and well equipped. Personally I loved the quirkiness of the oast House split across several levels and we were fortunate enough to stay in the master bedroom in the round oast. I had the best nights sleep I've had in years so can't understand the complaints about the beds but each to there own I suppose. We found everything we needed in the kitchen including a large jug and hand blender for perfect pancakes. Granted the towels were rough but I appreciated that they were good quality Christy towels and it was nothing 10 mins in the tumble dryer didn't fix. If you are looking for a modern luxuriously fitted out properly you may be disappointed but if like us you were hoping for a clean, well thought out unusual property located in a beautiful part of Kent then give Thornsdale Oast a try. Hopefully we will be back. Matt & Family

A superb place to stay, close to Rye , Camber and Winchelsea beach. We had a lovely family gathering, with many happy memories. A homely oast house, with clean, comfortable beds and great showers. The games room , board games and sky TV also helped us to get the most out of this wonderful holiday.

This is an interesting and potentially very attractive property, in a lovely location. We were very grateful for the kind help from the owners’ family in receiving a grocery delivery that we would have missed, having taken over 4 hours to do a 78-mile journey. Previous reviewers have mentioned poor cleaning – this isn’t your first impression as you walk in, but certainly generations of spiders have enjoyed life in the corners, under furniture, and behind curtains. Carpets are also quite stained in places. Ill-fitting doors (some of which have broken latches), heavy furniture, and bare-wood floors also mean that sounds travel easily from room to room and floor to floor. The outside is nice, but the patio area and shrubs alongside could do with a little regular attention too.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your feedback. We were more than happy to wait 2 hours to take your shopping into the kitchen / fridge for you, and I am a little confused on previous reviewers mentioning poor cleaning? I’m glad you had enough relaxation time to lift up the furniture and to look behind the curtains; we all relax in different ways. Unfortunately spiders are difficult to house train during the summer months and will avoid us if possible. We have bare wood floors so that we can cleanse the property to a high standard. We are glad you enjoyed your visit. Kind regards.

We had a great week at Thornsdale. Had problem with internet connection in house but could connect in garden, not too clever in the rain.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your comments. Glad you had a great week at Thornsdale. Sorry about the internet, we only wish you had contacted us as we have installed superfast broadband from BT. I can only assume one of the routers needed rebooting.
