Description

This pretty thatched cottage is the ideal base for exploring the New Forest and south coast.

Walnut Tree Cottage is a delightful, detached thatched cottage within the owner’s lawned grounds and lies opposite the owner’s home, which is steeped in history and which, in the 1830s, included a wheelwrights, post office and bakery. Also within the grounds is The Old Post Office (ref 30425) and The Hideaway (UKC540), providing an ideal opportunity a for another couple or guests wishing to holiday together whilst retaining their own space. It has plentiful beams and wooden floors. This is a convenient location set just back from the main road leading from Salisbury (9 miles) or Ringwood (5 miles). Keen walkers will delight in the fact that they are situated directly opposite footpaths within the New Forest National Park, with many scenic walks and ideal for spotting local wildlife. For those who would prefer to explore by cycle, the owners can offer a place to lock your bikes away when not in use. All properties have their own allocated parking, sitting-out area and large lawned gardens shared with the owners and their young family. They make ideal touring bases from which to visit the extensive attractions in the area. Not far away is the charming town of Fordingbridge with a host of shops, cafes and eateries, and the gentle flowing River Avon is also nearby. The location is convenient for road links to the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, Christchurch Harbour, and the coast including Poole and Bournemouth. We had a great time at Walnut Cottage. Jeremy, the owner, was both friendly and helpful and providing eggs/bread/jam/milk on arrival was a nice touch. The cottage is perfect for a family of three and we enjoyed a couple of lazy mornings as it is very comfortable. Great as a base to explore the forest and a special mention for the Surma Valley curry we had (which is only 300m away). It was really good. Can't recommend Walnut Cottage highly enough and we will definitely choose the cottage again. Thanks Jeremy.

We had a really nice time at the cottage, which was very comfortable, quiet and peaceful (despite the main road), and just lovely in general. Jeremy welcomes us and answered all our questions. The only reason we are not giving top mark is because we thought there could be a few more things in the house such as an OS maps of the new forest and a colander for pasta/rice and some games. Having said that we had a really nice time there with our 6 month old baby. Would definitely go again.

'Cottage' is actually a converted garage in the owners garden located on a very busy main road which is not suitable to cross as a pedestrian. Both the main bed and sofa bed mattresses are in dire need of attention so much so that I slept on the floor instead! Cottage is not child friendly... my three year old repeatedly ran into the low beams upstairs and couldn't sleep on the sofa bed as planned due to a large gap down one side. Kitchen has no extractor so all the fire alarms go off when you try to cook and shower head has a split in it resulting in water coming out all in the middle. We eventually got fed up and left 3 days into a 7 day rental... Avoid!!!!!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am very disappointed that you did not enjoy your holiday in Walnut Tree Cottage. I was particularly alarmed that you describe the nearly new (less than two months old) mattresses as “in dire need of attention” The mattresses are the highest specification available for that bed and for that size of sofa bed. On seeing your review, I immediately went over to the cottage to check with the current occupants (also staying with children) that there had not been some failure of, or damage to, the mattresses. I was met with disbelief when I told them of your comments and they said that the beds were very comfortable they were very happy with them and with the cottage. The sofa bed is a standard unit with a standard housing of the bed mechanism. When the bed is out, some 70% of it is free standing with a small element still in the sofa frame. As with most sofa beds, the sofa cushions are designed to be used along the sides and back of the sofa frame so that there are no gaps. I would have demonstrated this had I been aware you were having issues; you assured me that you were not. The cottage is not a converted garage. It was designed and built as a one bedroom, two storey, thatched cottage with an integral double garage. The double garage is still a double garage; there has been no conversion - although we mainly use it for storage rather than as a garage. That it is located in our one acre garden is made very clear in the description, but it is further from our house than most detached houses are from their neighbours. The cottage is not located on a busy main road, it is actually over 35 yards down a private gravel driveway leading from a small rural A road. The road does get busy at times during the summer but the location is clear from the property description and, as other reviews have stated, you don’t hear the traffic from the cottage. I'm confused as to why you would want to cross the road outside as a pedestrian since the pavement is on our side and on the other side the hedge which marks the boundary of the New Forest National Park prevents you leaving the road. If you follow the pavement a few yards in either direction you find walkways leading off from the other side of the road (the Avon Valley Walkway and the walkway along the old railway line to Breamore). You can certainly cross safely to access these. I am very sorry if your three year old was hurt by running into low beams. As far as I am aware, and as the photos of the cottage on the listing clearly show, the beams only come anywhere near child height in the lounge behind the television and its stand (and therefore inaccessible) and in the bedroom to the right of the dormer window. The chest of drawers shown in the photo is now placed along that wall (rather than parallel to it as in the photo) so those beams are now inaccessible too. The general feedback from guests with young children is that both the cottage and the garden are great for kids. The kitchen in the cottage does not have an extractor fan but this does not mean that the smoke alarms go off when you try to cook. The cottage is thatched so we have very high quality radio linked mains smoke alarms. These are not triggered by heat or steam; they are only triggered by smoke. If they went off while you were in the cottage, then it was because they detected smoke. In three years they have only been triggered twice before, both times by people burning toast. The alarms are very sensitive and would have detected smoke whether or not an extractor fan was being used. Finally, the shower head is not split or damaged in any way. Since we have hard water here, I test the shower heads in all our cottages between guests to see if they have become at all clogged up. I descaled and tested the shower head before your arrival and tested it again after you left. Water is flowing evenly out of every hole in the shower head. As I explained, the shower is a power shower rather than an electrically heated shower. It will work without the power being switched on (since the immersion heater tank is upstairs) but the pressure is poor. Without the pump, the water flows slowly and more from the centre holes as they are closest to the line of flow down the pipe. It is a shame that you did not mention any of these issues at the time as I would have done my utmost to help.

We had a lovely time here and our girls enjoyed playing in the beautiful gardens. The owner was very welcoming and the cottage was clean and well cared for. Great location and local facilities. The sofa bed was a little uncomfortable for two adults (and large baby bump!)

Walnut Tree is a lovely little cottage in a delightful area. The owners are friendly and helpful. A few 'updates' would really improve this cottage and get higher ratings. The bathroom for example. Overall though it is a really nice place to stay.
