Within walking distance is the medieval grand fortress of Raby Castle with its 200-acre deer park surrounding the castle. Beamish Museum lies only 20 miles away where life in the 1800s/1900s can be relived in this working museum. Motor enthusiasts may like to visit Croft Circuit only 12 miles. Durham city, only 17 miles, has a magnificent castle dating back to 1072, a beautiful cathedral, fine shops, galleries and eateries. Try a day exploring the magnificent Roman Wall country in Hexham and Corbridge, easily reached in under an hour and close to the Pennines. A little further venture to Northumberland taking in the magnificent heritage coastal route, stopping off to see Alnwick and explore the castle used to film Robin Hood, Harry Potter and Elizabeth. Meander through the cobbled streets, or visit the enchanting Alnwick Gardens with one of the largest Treehouse restaurants and water fountains. This property was an excellent setting for my husband's 50th birthday celebrations. The owners are close at hand and were so helpful in supplying us with extra kitchen equipment. Staindrop is a pleasant village with decent pub and shop. There are lots of places to visit very nearby and some lovely walks.

Exceeded all our expectations. Wonderfully decorated, huge inviting hallway- great for kids to play. Very spacious. We booked the chapel to celebrate my father in laws 80th birthday, so had a mix of ages and needs- all of which were met. Kitchen and dining facilities were so good that we ordered in take away on both the Friday and Saturday night. Less than ten minute drove to Barnard Castle. We had children ages, 10, 4 and 1 and the stairs weren't a problem so please don't let that put you off. One stair gate was provide , we took some of our own which unfortunately didn't fit due to the wide door / stair frames, a few more would have been handy. An abundance of quality bedding and towels are provided!!!! We can't wait for another reason to return- infact upon returning home we looked to see of it was booked over Christmas- sadly it was.

Lovely house and very spacious for 9 friends. The house is well equipped especially in the kitchen. Plenty of towels in bathrooms - and nice large towels too. Location is great - in centre of village but quiet. Small supermarket over the road and a pub a few minutes walk away. Short drive to Barnard Castle and several other places of interest. Only criticism is the sofas in the lounge. They are quite old and some can be uncomfortable if you sit in them for long periods. Overall - lovely house for a large group.

We stayed at The old chapel retreat with a group of friends. 8 adults in total, it's a beautiful house, well laid out and plenty of bathrooms! The games room on the top floor is a hidden jewel. The kitchen is very well equipped and the dining room is beautiful. across the road is a small spar for any essentials and the village pub is friendly. There are plenty of great walks nearby, we especially enjoyed the walk which starts oposite the church through Raby estate. Barnard Castle is also beautiful. We had a fantastic meal on saturday night at the Bridgewater Arms at Winston, which was recommended by the cottage owner. We would definitely stay here again.

Spacious, well appointed, warm and comfortable. Being an old chapel has its limitations (small windows) but that is a part of it's charm and character. Beautiful location with friendly village and easy local walking. Highly recommended.

A lovely old renovated church which to be perfectly honest needs the furnishings renewing to be classed as luxurious and the cleaner probably needs a bit more time or a bit of help during the changeover but not bad overall
