Description

A spacious 17th Century coaching inn with plenty of character. Great for special occassions with private use of leisure facilities nearby.

The Old Angel sleeps 12 adults and 2 children under the age of 8. Situated in the pretty conservation village of Winster, The Old Angel is a former 17th-century coaching inn. Adjoining another cottage, it offers a wealth of exposed oak beams, floorboards and flagstone floors. It also enjoys access to the facilities at Harthill Hall, just 3 miles (5 minutes) away with private use (12.30pm – 2.00pm each day) of the indoor heated swimming pool and sauna.
Opposite is the famous Market Hall (NT) with the village shop almost next door, and local inn just up the road. It makes an ideal holiday base, and is conveniently placed to visit the spa town of Buxton with its opera house. The bustling market town of Bakewell, situated on the River Wye, and crossed by a 13th century five-arched bridge is a good place to visit - buildings of note there include the 13th and 14th-century All Saints Church, with Saxon and Norman stonework. Within easy reach are Matlock and Matlock Bath (complete with Heights of Abraham cable cars), the popular market town of Ashbourne, the plague village of Eyam, Carsington Water with waterspouts, cycling and bird-watching. NT and period properties abound, including Kedleston Hall, Chatsworth House, Hardwick Hall and Haddon Hall. Excellent walking in the Peak District and marked cycle trails. Shops 10 yards.

The cottage was a perfect size for 12 when looking at the bedrooms and living space. Some of the equipment needs improving such as the toaster which does not work properly so breakfast is tiresome. Perfect location for walking, shopping and generally relaxing. Postcodes for the pool are inaccurate so we drove for an hour and did not find it. Paperwork gives 2 different sites.

Group felt the accommodation got very cold despite the heating being on constant. Floor boards were dangerous for children and dogs in places.

Lovely property full of character, we loved the open fire. Plenty of room for everyone and good kitchen and bathroom facilities. Some of the furnishings were a little bit tired and there was limited parking but that is to be expected in a small village. Well placed near the Bowling Green pub which served lovely food and the shop next door was very handy! Overall a great place for a family get together.

A lovely comfortable cottage , great for a big group with great kitchen amenities, very well thought of. I would definitely recommend staying there.

The stairs are a bit scary for the very elderly or very young and the sofas in the living room could have been more comfortable but I thoroughly enjoyed my 80th birthday party there and the feedback from my family(8 adults, 3 children) was very positive. Roll on 90!
