A spacious 17th-century coaching inn with plenty of character. Great for special occasions with private use of leisure facilities nearby.

The former 17th-century coaching inn, The Old Angel, sleeps 18 adults and is situated in the pretty conservation village of Winster. Adjoining another cottage, it offers a wealth of exposed oak beams and floorboards. It also enjoys access to the facilities at Harthill Hall, just 3 miles away with private use (12.30pm – 2.00pm each day) of the indoor heated swimming pool and sauna.
The village shop is almost next door and local inn just up the road.
Moreover, opposite The Old Angel is the famous Market Hall which is run by the National Trust. It makes an ideal holiday base, and is conveniently placed to visit the spa town of Buxton with its opera house. The bustling market town of Bakewell, situated on the River Wye is close by and within easy reach are Matlock and Matlock Bath (complete with Heights of Abraham cable cars), the popular market town of Ashbourne, the plague village of Eyam, Carsington Water with watersports, cycling and birdwatching. National Trust and period properties abound, including Kedleston Hall, Chatsworth House, Hardwick Hall and Haddon Hall. Excellent walking in the Peak District and marked cycle trails. Shops 10 yards.

    Great place to stay. Parking a little difficult but very homely and well equipped.

    There were 11 of us having a walking weekend in the Peaks at the end of September. The weather was cold and drizzly, so it would have been lovely to have had better control over the central heating timer, which appeared to be in a locked cupboard on the 1st landing. The heating did not come on in the morning before breakfast, so showering and getting dressed was achieved with some speed. However, the ensuite shower rooms were tiny, and it was impossible to bend over the sink to wash one's face without pushing the door open with one's rear end. There was plenty of space in the kitchen for us all, and eating and socialising worked well. There were two fridges in the pantry area, so plenty of space for storing food. Parking was not ideal - the single space outside the house is only suitable for a small car, and we found ourselves parking on the road a hundred yards away. The house was centrally situated in Winster next to the small shop, which was extremely convenient.
