English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Step back in time at Beamish Open Air Museum or enjoy a spot of retail therapy at the Metro Centre both easily accessible.

These two delightful holiday cottages (Refs MRA and MRB), each with its own history, are tastefully converted from former barns dating back to the 1600s. Retaining character and charm, they lie in a peaceful setting overlooking countryside with many cycle tracks nearby. Ideal walking and fishing country, yet close to famous attractions - visitors can step back in time at the Beamish Open Air Museum or visit the Metro Centre (a shopper’s paradise), Hexham (with its glorious abbey), Durham City (a city of contrasts, with its fine cathedral and designer shops), or the Northumberland coast, which are all within an hour’s drive. The medieval castle of Raby has a 200-acre deer park and is a firm favourite with visitors. An ideal location to explore all the surrounding AONB. Shop 500 yards.

Adjoins owner’s home. Open-plan living/dining room with gas ‘coal-effect’ fire in feature black fireplace, limestone slate floor and large modern kitchen area. My family and I spent all Christmas at the two cottages John Wesley and Methodist Cottage. We had a fabulous time, and you could not wish for more. They were very spacious, clean, comfortable. We were living the dream. Thank you to the owners who put up Christmas trees and decorations which made us feel at home.

we had workmen drilling banging and sawing at 8 oclock for two mornings outside our window.a heating time clock in the kitchen was very loud as you could hear it upstairs.apart from this we really enjoyed the cottage.

We loved the cottage. We had a 3 generation holiday, kids aged 9 and 12, us and Granny with some mobility issues. The split level floor did cause an initial hiccup but as long as Granny made sure to use the back of one of the dining chairs to support her, she was able to negotiate the cottage with ease. The kitchen was cavernous! Well stocked with all the equipment we could need, and the teabags, coffee, sugar and pint of milk were a nice touch too. The bedrooms were extremely comfortable but my husband being 6'2" did struggle in the standard double sleigh bed. The bed was very comfy but since the nation is getting taller, the owner may want to consider queen or king size beds for the double rooms when they come up for replacement. The bathroom was gorgeous but the shower over the bath is not particularly practical and we were constantly worried that our kids may leave the bathroom awash after using it. However, the combi-boiler ensured there was plenty of hot water and the water pressure was phenomenal. The outdoor area was an added bonus, we sat out (in May, in the UK!) on the bench seat on a couple of evenings. The kids loved being able to visit the horses and the owner allowed them to use the trampoline too which went down a storm. The new bunnies, Tom and Jerry, were also big hits with my kids, especially my daughter. We couldn't have asked for a better base to explore the North East and for Granny and I to revisit places we hadn't been to for 35 years.

We had an excellent stay, a minor thing would be the sharing of 1 bathroom. it would have been helpful if a full shower had been installed as apposed to a hand held shower hose and an en suite as 1 bathroom between 4 adult for longer than a weekend could have been difficult. But would definitely book the cottage again for a short break, excellent value for money

Had the most brilliant time with family . My daughters 30 th 6 of us ladies and four generations . Fab day at Beamish and at Newcastle Quayside. We stayed for a weekend only . Would love to go back in the summer . Only thing we would like to see is perhaps a stand alone shower cubicle but we managed as only there the weekend . Many thanks to the owners . A beautiful immaculate property worth every penny !
