English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

This 16th-century property is set in a peaceful location, yet is close to many attractions, including the New Forest.

This superb, detached, 16th-century holiday property enjoys a truly beautiful location. Peacefully located along a quiet lane and nestled within gently sloping, lawned gardens, with rose lined pathways, a meandering shallow stream and views at the rear over the countryside. Within the beautiful gardens sits a tiled outdoor heated swimming pool, with elegant roman end and shallow steps down to the pool, and which also benefits from an electronic safety cover. Steeped in history, this delightful home offers many original architectural features in keeping with the character of a period house, such as beams (some low), original inglenook fireplaces and tiled floors. The fire back in the inglenook fireplace in the snug depicts William and Mary and his apple trees, this matches one in the National Trust’s fire back collection in Petworth House, made in 1690s. There is also a spacious green oak studio with high ceilings and French doors, which provides a fabulous reception room opening straight out onto the patio decking, and also includes an en-suite shower and kitchenette, ideal as an alternative sleeping arrangement, with a day bed which can be converted to a 6ft double.

As well as the main living room, there is a snug, a desk area and at the heart of the home, a farmhouse-style kitchen with Aga and a dining area overlooking the extensive gardens. The large, raised decked area is an ideal spot from which to savour the views whilst having an aperitif or dining al fresco on a warm summer’s evening. The lovely view over the gardens can be enjoyed from the tastefully styled bedrooms, with the large master bedroom being a particular feature, with its own dressing room and en-suite bathroom. In the small bedroom at the top of the stairs, a section of the original wall construction is exposed. The 4 bathrooms are well fitted, one of them has a roll-top bath with super Moroccan themed tiles. High quality linen and beds are throughout.

The ever popular New Forest is part of the National Park and is a haven for wildlife, with many roaming ponies across the heathland, extensive walks, cycling and riding routes. There is plenty to do in the area for all ages, all year round. The popular sailing town of Lymington is only a 10-minute drive, with its pretty harbour, cobbled pedestrianised streets, boutiques, eateries, pubs and day trips to the Isle of Wight on the ferry. Other places of interest include Beaulieu Motor Museum, Bucklers Hard, Marwell Zoo, Peppa Pig at Paultons Park, New Forest Owl and Otter Park and Southampton with its maritime history, to name but a few! Salters Cottage is also within easy reach of many beaches, including Mudeford, Sandbanks, Poole and Bournemouth. Shop ½ mile and pub ¼ mile.

Three steps down to living room with wood-burning stove. Farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room with Aga (for cooking), gas cooker, French doors and tiled floors. Snug. Desk area. Separate toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed, dressing room and en-suite shower room with toilet. Further double bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet. Twin bedroom with zip & link beds (can be 6ft double) and vanity basin. Single bedroom with additional single pull-out bed (for +1). Bathroom with roll-top bath and toilet. Ground floor studio with 6ft double day bed (for alternative sleeping only), ornamental fireplace, kitchenette, French doors, tiled floor and en-suite shower room with toilet. Some rooms with low beams.

What a beautiful venue for our annual get together! The layout of the cottage is perfect for socialising - we cooked, drank a little prosecco, gossiped, played games, and danced, making good use of the space and facilities available. As one other reviewer has said, we didn't use the far room quite as much but it is a lovely light space and I think this would come into its own in the summer as it looks out onto the deck/patio. We took an easy walk to the local pub one evening - good food and friendly staff. We ordered our groceries from a local supermarket beforehand and they were delivered shortly after we arrived as arranged. All very easy. We drew straws for the huge master bedroom but all bedrooms and bathrooms are lovely, although the iron bedstead in one room was very creaky making it difficult for two ladies to share! All resolved though by one of the ladies decamping into the single pull out bed from the next room. There are so many places of interest nearby and we particularly enjoyed cycling through the new forest. But most of all we loved staying in! The cottage is stunning and the gardens beautiful (top marks to the gardener!). Small point - it would be nice to have access to the property earlier than 4 pm and as we had a hitch with accessing the house key, exacerbated by lack of phone signal (blame EE for that!), everyone had to wait outside for a further half hour. I'm sure this was a one-off issue though. All in all, we had everything we needed for an amazing long weekend that just wasn't long enough 😊

Absolutely stunning Cottage...I've stayed in quite a few cottages but Salters Cottage has to be up there with one of my favourites. It was very warm and cosy and it had a really lovely feeling to it. It was clean and had everything that we needed in and around the Cottage. We would definitely go back again, we all loved it! Have nothing negative to say 😀

This is a beautiful cottage, set in lovely wrap around gardens. It proved a perfect venue to celebrate a special birthday. The rooms were comfortably furnished and , as we visited in October, well heated in the evenings, although we found the Aga very hot in the kitchen! Our grandaughter really loved the Gypsy caravan.

Lovely cottage. Day room underutilised and arrival and departure times are too restrictive. House finders need to use more than one cleaner to prepare the property between visits.

A lovely and relaxing holiday property that's well located for enjoying the New Forest with plenty of amenities nearby. The pool was great (both my kids learned to swim in the week we stayed) and there's plenty of space for peace and quiet and socialising.

An excellent property and we only used part of it. Given the wonderful weather the pool was a great bonus ( not there when we booked it) and good and plenty of towels to with it. Very well equipped throughout. One double bedroom a bit small whereas the master is huge! lovely gardens and we saw the gardener and told him what a good job he does.

The ideal place for a large group to get together which is what we did. The garden is large and, if the weather is kind, you could just sit about and go nowhere. Kitchen could be better equipped with small things like Pyrex bowls and larger cereal bowls in order to make porridge. These are small things, it is a great location and just the place to relax.
