Description

Overlooking the river (with fishing rights) this delightful cottage has use of a swimming pool, tennis court, games room and play area.

"Deep in Tarka the Otter country where the river glides beneath the trees and time stands still..."

Orford Mill lies alongside the River Torridge in a beautiful wooded valley, nestled below the historic town of Torrington. With its air of peace and tranquillity, abundant wildflowers and river life, it became the setting for Henry Williamson’s magical story of Tarka the Otter. Indeed, the mill wheel in which Tarka hid from the hound Deadlock was at Orford Mill. This superb location makes a wonderful holiday base, especially for families, with sandy beaches on the North Devon coast only 10 miles away.
The complex consists of a Grade II listed water mill and manor house, now converted into nine delightful cottages, all equipped to Visit Britain ‘4 Star’ standard. Most overlook the charming ornamental courtyard with its ponds and flowerbeds. Riverside is detached and overlooks the river. All cottages retain character features such as exposed beams and stonework, and each is furnished in an individual style to a very high standard. Guests can enjoy an indoor heated swimming pool, with lovely river views, as well as a spa room and all-weather tennis court, games room and fenced outdoor children’s play area. There is an on-site cafe with wi-fi (open 9am-9pm). In addition, fishing rights are available on 200 yards of river (bring own licence, or avail locally at cost). All the waterways are safely fenced.
The countryside around Orford Mill is dotted with sleepy villages nestled among the hills, while extensive woodlands, traversed by many footpaths, offer the chance to experience the area’s natural beauty at close quarters. Adjacent to the grounds are the renowned RHS gardens at Rosemoor, and other local attractions include Dartington Crystal, offering a factory tour and visitor centre. Great Torrington is only a mile away with good shopping and amenities, and there is golf at nearby Hartland. Orford Mill adjoins Torrington Common which extends to 365 acres, incorporating 20 miles of footpaths. The common is a haven for wildlife. The ‘Big Sheep’ and ‘Milky Way’ theme parks are each less than 10 miles away.
The River Torridge runs downstream to the ancient port of Bideford, still with a working quay offering boat trips out to Lundy Island. Just around the corner is the attractive little town of Appledore with its colourful houses and narrow streets. To either side lies Devon’s most spectacular stretch of coastal scenery – a chain of magnificent cliffs and rocky promontories, interspersed here and there by long flat sandy beaches, where the Atlantic breakers roll in to create ideal surfing conditions. There are splendid beaches at Instow and Westward Ho!, the latter bordered by the Royal North Devon Golf Club, and the Northam Nature Reserve. Further west is the supremely picturesque Clovelly, whose narrow, cobbled main street descends at a dizzying gradient to the little harbour below. To the south, the cathedral city of Exeter can be reached via a delightful drive through lush river valleys.
Orford Mill offers very attractive accommodation set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens with streams, waterfalls and the water wheel which is still operational. Excellent as a touring base, it makes a good choice for a holiday whatever the weather. Shop ½ mile.

This two-storey cottage, adjacent to the swimming pool, has a private decked balcony with lovely views over the river. Beamed living/dining room with wood burner and French doors to balcony. Book it and you will regret it. Cold cottage with no control over the heating..either accept the freezing cold or leave. You are treated like a moron who doesn't understand how to keep clean. They want you out of the shared spa after 2 hours and they won't open it if not convenient for them. Barbecue use: £6 ! To play pool per play: 50p !

    Response from: Administrator

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are extremely disappointed to read your review. Upon arrival, you advised that you were unhappy with the facilities provided. The shared facilities (swimming pool, spa room, tennis court etc.) are clearly advertised within the property description on the website. It is unfortunate that you had not understood this at the time of booking. The cottage is fully centrally heated. At no time during your stay was it “freezing cold”. The heating was set to come on every morning from 6am – 11am, and every evening from 5pm – 11 pm. The cottage is fully insulated with walls 3 feet thick, and stays very warm. All of the duvets provided are 13.5 tog. The weather was particularly mild during your stay, so mild that you wanted to use the barbeque! Our spa room is for use by appointment only. This ensures privacy for the duration of your usage and enables us to clean between groups. We allow 2 hours between bookings. After you had used the spa facility for 4 hours, we had to ask you to leave as another guest was waiting to use it. We charge £6 to use the barbeque, which covers provision of the gas cylinder, and we clean it afterwards. The pool table is a standard coin-operated table used in most establishments. Finally, you expressed your dissatisfaction with the arrival (4pm) and departure (10am) times. This information is stated within the Booking Terms & Conditions, the booking confirmation and is a set standard for all properties let by Cottages.com

We loved the balcony and enjoyed being by the river. The children loved their time and enjoyed the swimming. We were disappointed with our welcome and felt very pressured to keep the carpets clean for the week! If you are going to let out to families please don't have a cream carpet and don't make this the focus of the welcome talk! Washing maching and dishwasher weren't working properly which made it hard work. Would have been better if pool open a bit longer so adults can swim later.

Heating a problem as not able to control it in cottage. Other places we have stayed have provided logs we had to go and buy logs every day. Pool not very warm. Changing room really cold during day. Shower in bathroom in cottage useless.

    Response from: Administrator

Response on behalf of the owner; We were surprised to read your review, as you did not make any comments or complaints to us during your stay. Our swimming pool temperature is kept constantly at 30 degrees (probably the highest in the Country) this can be confirmed by our swimming instructor who teaches babies to swim and we are frankly astonished that you did not find this warm enough. Likewise, the heat is on in the changing rooms right through the day and until the pool is closed at 9pm. Again, your comments about the heating surprised us, as you had the windows of your cottage open throughout most of the day. We know of no other complexes which provide free wood for log burners for the duration of your stay. The shower in the cottage is dependent on the water pressure, and we are sorry this did not come up to your expectations.
