Description

Croft cottage situated in a stunning location with panoramic views across the Kyle of Tongue

Melness Cottage is a traditional croft cottage situated in a stunning location with panoramic views across the Kyle of Tongue. This detached two storey cottage is situated in the quiet hamlet of Skinnet in North West Sutherland. Just a short walk from the sea and surrounded by majestic mountain ranges, awe inspiring beaches and pretty harbour villages, the cottage provides an ideal base from which to explore this wonderful and totally unspoilt region. The cottage has been upgraded and refurbished whilst retaining its original charm. There is a cosy lounge, a separate dining room and a small but well equipped kitchen. On the first floor are two good sized bedrooms and a bright, modern family bathroom. The views across the bay with the mountains beyond are simply stunning. There is a large garden, mainly laid to lawn, bounded by an original low stone wall. Whilst this far North West coastline seems wild and remote, there are a good selection of amenities and facilities in the immediate area. There is also a local bar and restaurant just 1/2 mile from the cottage. Perched on a promontory overlooking the magnificent Kyle of Tongue, the nearby village of Tongue enjoys spectacular views across the sea, with the mountains of Ben Hope and Ben Loyal in the distance. The village has a good selection of local amenities including a general store, two hotels with restaurants, post office, petrol station, craft shops and village church. Great location with amazing views. First time tried Tesco delivery for weeks shop as local quite expensive and stopped all those unnecessary trips. I say this as the roads are so small and it takes ages to travel anywhere. However there is so much to do within walking distance if you are into empty white sand covered Beaches and blue sea, why travel to find the same 10 miles east or west. Other bonus no internet so kids quickly turn to going outside and playing as I did 40+ years ago. Inside the house as warned watch your head on that beam on the stairs....everything is compact and tight with the bathroom the biggest room in the place. Wife told me off for booking place with no washing machine, which ok was a pain when cleaning salty wet swim gear. I know the kitchen is tiny however a shed or something to store outside gear and a washing machine would be great. Others may also not like the sitting room as seating arrangements tight and require imagination but again look where you are the picture outside the window is far superior to the tv....ps Clothes do dry quickly with the wind though.....if the rain stops enough to allow this....forgot to say we were. A family or 2 'slimish' adults and 3 boys 7 9 and 11...when thinking about space and those stairs....but you learn quickly about ducking and part of the charm....lastly do not fear about the antique. China cabinet....it survived my boys....just

The cottage was warm. The view is great. It is rather further from the sea (walking) than the prospectus suggests (which is as the raven glides). The only problem for anybody taking the cottage for longer than a week is that there is no washing machine and the nearest launderette used to be in Thurso (40 miles away). It may not be there now.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your review. The distance to the sea will be corrected on the website and a washing machine installed for sure.
