From a touch of luxury to characterful heritage, experience one of our truly inspiring holiday properties.

A grand four poster bed and cosy seating area make The Dovecote a romantic hideaway for two, adjacent to the Oxford Canal.

Situated in the lower part of the tiny hamlet of Thrupp, this detached property stands in the grounds of a manor house and lies adjacent to the 18th-century Oxford Canal. Offering wonderfully characterful accommodation for a holiday, this is a cosy little romantic hideaway for two. In its day, the canal was a main artery to British industry, but in modern times, the barges move at a more relaxed pace. Thrupp starred as itself in the TV series Morse in the adaptation of Colin Dextor’s Last Bus to Woodstock. In Thrupp is The Boat public house with its open fire and beamed ceilings. A gentle, short stroll along the Oxford Canal towpath towards the nearby village of Kidlington leads to the Jolly Boatman on the A4260. Both pubs serve a selection of drinks and good food. There are many walks to be enjoyed nearby, either canal-side or through the owner’s managed woodland, along the banks of the River Cherwell, which is abundant with wildlife and birds. A ½-hour walk along the towpath or short drive in the car leads to Kidlington, which, recognised as the ‘largest village in England’, caters for every need - having several supermarkets, post office, chemists, launderette and various pubs and cafés. There is a nearby Park and Ride service into the city of Oxford as well as a regular bus service from the village. The M40 motorway is easily reached, connecting to either London or Birmingham in about 1 hour. The properties make an ideal holiday base to explore the Cotswolds and Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon. The town of Woodstock, home to Blenheim Palace (birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill) and the village of Bladon (where Churchill is buried) are within 5 miles. Shops 2 miles, pubs ¼ mile.

Compact dining room/breakfast area/kitchen area. Shower room and toilet. First floor: Cosy galleried landing with double bedroom and seating area. NB: This property was built as a dovecote in the 17th century and as such, is very small.

Very warm and cosy, despite the noisy heating pump. Kitchen/diner was adequate but the bedroom/sittingroom was uncomfortable and cramped. The bucket seats were very uncomfortable. the bed was comfortable, but was not the Fourposter in the photograph and description. A very good location, ideal for Oxford and the nearby stately homes and Cotswold towns. being by the canal would be particularly pretty in the summer, but without a view from the property, a bit limited. We are still awaiting the return of our security/damage cheque two weeks on!

Lovely place to stay. The cooker was a puzzle to work out and in the end we didn't use it. The bedroom was lovely and the whole cottage was adorable. However if we had stayed longer than the 2 days I would have wanted a sofa but the size doesn't allow that.

The cottage was slightly different to how it was described when booking the property but we didn't let it affect our stay. The cottage was clean, warm and cosy and it had all amenities we could wish for. The location was lovely and the locals were friendly. I will definitely be recommending The Dovecote to friends and family

A good location by the canal and The Boat pub was very friendly and the food was very good. A little bit smaller than we were expecting but still a good cottage.
