English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Step back in time at Beamish Open Air Museum or enjoy a spot of retail therapy at the Metro Centre both easily accessible.

These two delightful holiday cottages (Refs MRA and MRB), each with its own history, are tastefully converted from former barns dating back to the 1600s. Retaining character and charm, they lie in a peaceful setting overlooking countryside with many cycle tracks nearby. Ideal walking and fishing country, yet close to famous attractions - visitors can step back in time at the Beamish Open Air Museum or visit the Metro Centre (a shopper’s paradise), Hexham (with its glorious abbey), Durham City (a city of contrasts, with its fine cathedral and designer shops), or the Northumberland coast, which are all within an hour’s drive. The medieval castle of Raby has a 200-acre deer park and is a firm favourite with visitors. An ideal location to explore all the surrounding AONB. Shop 500 yards.

Adjoins owner’s home. Open-plan living/dining room with gas ‘coal-effect’ fire in feature black fireplace, limestone slate floor and large modern kitchen area. Open stairs to first floor: Two double bedrooms, each with TV. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with shower attachment, toilet and tiled floor.

Really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. We arrived in the dark and missed the turning for the cottage. There is a sign for the cottage but it isn't lit at night. The cottage was a lot bigger than expected. It's well equipped and very cosy. Lovely views from the kitchen and bedroom windows.

The cottage was immaculate and the surroundings were beautiful. Really had the country feel. The owners were also excellent and nothing was too much trouble.

I would say the only negative for this cottage is for such a big kitchen with a few empty cupboards a dishwasher would have made all the difference , we only stayed three nights so it was alright but if it had been for a week I might have thought again.

Lovely ,warm, snug cottage for our party of 6,perfect location to stay for visiting Beamish Museum and Durham Cathedral. It was spacious, well furnished and beautifully decorated with a nice outdoor seating area which unfortunately we couldn't make use of as the weather was cold and wet. However, it could do with a separate and extra toilet and a shower - with 6 sixty something year olds there were a few desperate toilet moments!!!

While the cottage was very clean and well equipped there were a couple of problems. The floorboards upstairs were extremely creaky and disturbed everyone in the night if someone got up. Only having one bathroom for 6 people could be a challenge. The bathroom did not have a separate shower, only a shower head attached to the taps over the bath, which would pose problems for anyone with a mobility problem. The sofas downstairs were also not comfortable and seemed to need the support replacing.
