The cottage was generally well-equipped with plenty of coal for the fire - very welcome in November - and loads of books and DVDs if the weather were to be bad. Given how generally well set up the cottage was, I was surprised at a few small omissions - especially it seemed a bit mean to only have one toilet roll supplied in the main bathroom and the kitchen could have done with some washing-up liquid, scrubber and cloth to wash the odd thing that wouldn't go easily into the dish washer and to wipe down surfaces. That said, the kitchen had plenty of dish washer tablets, so the dish washer got used every day. The garden has a steepish bank rising up at the back of the house, rather than a drop as we had assumed from the description.

Driveway full of weeds. Grass had not been cut. Garage full no room for car. All around cottage was overgrown. Gate where dustbins were sited could not be opened. Had to buy coal and kindling which was not stated in the brochure/ internet description. Rang caretaker never got a reply . No call from owner.2 bulbs gone no spares. 2nd lounge no heating and kitchen cold. Arrived 5pm cottage cold had to sort out heating. No dish cloth, no washing up liquid, no kitchen roll had to buy. Stairs very steep no mention in brochure consider dangerous for elderly people. Water basin in bathroom slow to empty and smelt and there was a crack in the basin which had been not professionally repaired. Only one toilet roll had to buy. Rear patio a tip/disgrace - no way would you sit out and the bench at the front waste of time. The picture of the garden very misleading gave impression of bigger and flatter even though it said fence sloped away was stretching the truth quite a bit. All In all very disappointing especially as the owner is a professional person who I am sure would not be happy with the cottage presentation.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I offer my apologies for overgrowth to the garden / grass / patio as mild weather and rain had led to a late growth spurt and weather and illness had prevented the gardener getting in to address, (this was rectified soon after your departure). I’m afraid the other comments are very upsetting as I feel they are unfair and inaccurate - posted 3 weeks after your visit, giving no chance to address at the time if there had been concerns. If anyone is upset in any way please call the caretaker or me at the time. If you don’t get an answer, it is because the signals are poor in the area so please try again or from elsewhere. The garage houses a table tennis table which most folk are pleasantly surprised at and enjoy but could easily be laid aside if you preferred a car inside. Coal is provided (see the more recent Reevoo). Kindling can be collected from wood. The gate can be opened. Spare bulbs, washing-up liquid, dishwasher tablets and batteries are available. The spare bench that you refer to - someone must have popped it out from the garage because they felt it would be useful in the garden. The cottage has broad straight stairs / handrail. My mother aged 78 was fine with them but extreme old age or disability might not. Heating is timed coming on at 16.30 but can be altered and temperature tastes vary. The web tour provides a clear picture of what the cottage and garden look like. The water basin drains fine with no smell and the crack is not unhygienic and does not affect function. Culcharry Cottage is a 4 not 5 star property and a family home that I as a professional person and father of 3 am proud of and return to whenever time allows.
