English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Cowleaze has a lovely countryside location where there are some great walks to be enjoyed and guests could spot some wildlife!

Bailey Ridge Farm Cottages, located in the beautiful Dorset countryside of the Blackmore Vale, are on the owners’ family run farm with a beef suckler herd, a small flock of sheep and chickens. These three delightful, converted stone barns (refs DBBM, DBBL and DBBK) offer good quality accommodation and a comfortable place to relax, unwind, enjoy country walking, see plenty of wildlife and are ideal for exploring Dorset and Somerset. They can be booked together to accommodate up to 18 guests. Golf and fishing are within easy driving, and yachting, canoeing and sailing are available at Halstock Reservoir. Wriggle View (ref DBBM) offers ‘upside down’ accommodation, whilst Jolliffe (ref DBBK) and Cowleaze (ref DBBL) are of the conventional design. The owners welcome guests to enjoy the farm activities and animals which the children will love. Visit the historic market town of Sherborne, 5 miles, with its castle, abbey and shops, or the chalk ‘Cerne Abbas Giant’. Venture further afield into the thriving county town of Dorchester, 10 miles, with Dinosaur Museum, Terracotta Warriors, Teddy Bear Museum and the world renowned Tutankhamun exhibition. Spend family time visiting Bovington Tank Museum with its fascinating collection of tanks, Monkey World, Weymouth with its picturesque 17th century harbour, Blue Flag beach and sealife centre, and then wander along the Chesil Beach and famous World Heritage Jurassic Coast, with its stunning scenery, taking in Abbotsbury Swannery and Tropical Gardens. In south Somerset are many historic houses such as Montacute House, Tintinhull and Forde Abbey. Family attractions include Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum with Concorde, the Haynes Motor Museum with wonderful display of classic and vintage cars, and slightly further afield, Longleat House and Safari Park. Somerset offers many exciting venues including Glastonbury Tor, Clarks Factory Village, Cheddar Gorge and Caves and the Georgian city of Bath to name a few. Shop and pub 1½ miles.

Large, beamed, open-plan living/dining room and kitchen area. Oak floor throughout. First floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed and en-suite shower room with toilet. Further double bedroom with 6ft bed (zip & link, can be twin). Twin bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

Fantastic - great location to explore the area (again). Ideal for families with young children (ours aged 9 & 6). Tank museum, Fleet Air Arm museum, Cheddar Gorge, the coast for fossil hunting (not that far away), Dorchester - various museums in a package deal (teddy bear inc Chineses warriors, dinosaur, Tutankhamun & Dorset Country museum. Did not visit Haynes motor museum this time. Pub not too far away. Great hosts - our children loved the cats, the barn to play in (tyre swing and basket ball etc.), use of cycles and the quad bike rides with Terry. Will return.

Very nice holiday on the farm. Children loved helping Terry and check on the sheep in the fields. Very rural area where we never been before. Saw a lot of Britain already, but were never in this part. Like to go again.

We had a great time. It is remote though but that suited us fine. I wouldn't expect a farm to be in the middle of a town! Kids loved seeing the lambs being born and the owners were great.

We were very lucky to be upgraded on arrival and stayed in wiggle view cottage but I have no reason to think cookware would have been any less of a top standard cottage than the one we stayed in. Stunning place, wonderfully accommodating owners. I've only given location and local amenities a slightly lower score because there wasn't a shop or pub to walk to...well unless you like hiking that far. But that's not a fault of the cottage, besides we had a car.
