English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Sleeping fifteen guests and with plenty of facilities on the estate, there is something to keep the whole family entertained.

"Enjoy the ‘cream’ of Devon at one of the ten cottages on the Ashcombe Estate..."

Situated in the heart of rolling Devon countryside, the privately owned Ashcombe country estate nestles in a peaceful valley close to the sandy beaches of Dawlish and Torquay. Enjoy walking on the estate’s hills and woodlands, swim in the heated indoor swimming pool, or relax in the sauna at Woodhouse Farm while children play in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds. The owners have made a great effort to ensure that the cottages are both comfortable and practical while the location could not be better for a wide range of Devon attractions.
It might be a family holiday or big reunion, a special celebration, a fun business get-together, a group trip, or a relaxing weekend to recharge your batteries; whatever the reason the facilities are designed to be perfect for winter and summer holidays and the secrets of the Ashcombe cottages’ appeal are presentation, comfort and convenience. The cottages are maintained to very high standards. All have leather sofas, flatscreen digital TVs and very comfortable mattresses - the owners consider a good night’s sleep the most important thing! The cottages either have Italian tiled floors or wooden floors, and some still retain many original features including oak beamed ceilings. The properties cater for almost any party size, sleeping from 4 to 28 people and are all rated either 4 or 5 stars. Ashcombe’s larger cottages provide great value for money for visitors sharing with their friends and families. For meals, an in-house chef can be booked to come and do the hard work (arranged direct with the owner). The heated indoor swimming pool, very close to the properties (apart from HGGL which is 1 mile away and has its own pool) is perfect for any rainy days and keep the children happy. Cider Barn sleeping 16 and Nut Tree Farm sleeping 28, which are both 5 star rated, also have outdoor swimming pools for the summer.
For those wishing to enjoy a more adrenaline-charged holiday, the brilliant Ashcombe outdoor activity centre (at extra cost) offers quad bike safaris, clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintballing and more and is located just under a mile down the lane and is available for those 14 years and over. Families with youngsters will love the ’A Touch of the Wild’, a camp based activity club where children can take part in courses like bush-craft and canoe building, or if you want to keep them entertained for longer you could enrol them in the Woodland Adventure Club where they will discover the fun you can have in the wild. From camp fire cooking and toasting marshmallows to bug hunting and learning woodland skills, a day with the experienced staff will ensure they come away with a new found love of the great outdoors. And for adults the Ashcombe Village Club provides cheap beer, event evenings and a cheerful atmosphere from which to unwind.
Both Dartmoor National Park and the historic city of Exeter are only 20 minutes’ drive away while the famous South Devon Coast, with wonderful sandy beaches, is barely 3 miles. Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, several golf courses, loads of family theme parks, zoos, sailing and fishing are all within easy reach, not to mention the many excellent pubs and restaurants that Devon is famous for. The wild beauty of Dartmoor is 20 minutes away with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Numerous National Trust properties are close by including Agatha Christie’s Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and water sports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham with its annual crab catching competition. Slightly f...

Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive. Take a walk along the South West Coast Path which runs along the entire length of the Jurassic Coast and offers the walker stunning views, with a bird’s eye view of many coastal features. From the coast path you can experience the drama of sheer cliff faces, take in the wonderful towns of Beer, the ‘picture postcard’ fishing village, or Budleigh Salterton. This tranquil and historic seaside town nestles on the edge of a pebble beach beneath spectacular red cliffs, made famous by literary giants such as Noel Coward, P.G. Wodehouse and Anthony Trollope. Visit Seaton with its famous trams or Sidmouth which still has a unique charm and has captivated thousands of holidaymakers. Beautiful gardens, leisurely walks, Regency history, clean beaches and friendly shops – it is all here in this lovely seaside town. All in all Ashcombe is an excellent base to explore, experience and enjoy ‘The Cream of Devon’. Main shops 3 miles.

We had a lovely time at the rainbow cottage. Very close to the Ashcombe activity centre which was excellent fun and also good value for money. The facilities at the cottage were pretty basic but did everything we needed. The cottage was very clean on arrival had good central heating. The pool was very close and lots of fun. The facilities were pretty good but it was the very minor things that let it down, there was no salt and pepper, such a small complaint but it's these little things that really help get us to give 10/10. One gripe was the fact that it never said we couldn't be a 'stag do' on the website but then I had a phone call after I'd paid for it saying we couldn't be, luckily our 'wedding party' was a mixed group and they didn't seem to mind but such a large stipulation should be made clear before booking. It was very easy to find and the sign posts really help. All the beds were very comfortable and there were plenty of bathrooms which is always good when you have a group of 15. The water pressure for the showers could have been a little better but once again, it was perfectly fine. I don't think it would be a good place to go if you wanted to live in luxury for a week but for our weekend full of activities and games it was ideal. I would recommend it.

My family, friends and I had a really lovely time. The whole house was warm and inviting, there was plenty of cooking equipment and fridge/freezer space. The pool was lovely and I have been informed that the sauna was also great. It was all so brilliant that I've been bugged by everyone to know when we're going again.

the weekend was a family get together for my husband's 65th birthday and booked a a surprise. The cottage was an absolute delight, all the rooms were nice and clean and there was more than enough kitchen equipment to cater for 15 people plus stairgates and high chairs and cots ,which was brilliant for us as we had a baby and a very young child with us.There was a lovely indoor swimming pool with changing rooms and a sauna as well as a well stocked play room for young children.Outside there was a lovely safe area with a slide and swings and a climbing frame. The cottage we had ,had its'own patio area with plenty of seating and an easy to use gas B.B.Q.The only issue withe cottage was that the shower well in the bunk beds room did not drain as it seemed to be blocked or not draining at all. However we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are hoping to return and would definitely recommend the place to others. So thankyou Rainbow Cottage.

My scores are based on the fact that we were not informed of how very difficult it was to access the Ashcombe cottages. The long narrow winding lane to and from the properties was an absolute nightmare to negotiate if met by traffic from the opposite direction. For me personally this spoil my holiday as I dreaded having to make that journey.. Overall I felt the cost of the holiday was very high as the cottages were in need of major renevation and the standard of cleanliness was poor. The stairs etc were ingrained with dirt.. We stayed for 2 weeks but our second week was in Columbia which was even worse than Rainbow the extractor fan in kitchen was disgusting. The cottages were well equipped for the party size and beds clean. The cleaning staff were lovely though and the gardener was an absolute delightful gentleman. The maintenance gentleman was very quick to respond and get the children's play area cleared of sheep faeces after the sheep escaped and fouled this area on one day of our stay.. The lady in reception was also very kind when I informed her that my 4 year old grandson had vomited whilst in bed and her main concern was for him. We obviously cleaned the bedding etc. On moving into Columbia for our second week we had a long wait whilst it was cleaned and I was shocked at the disgusting state it had been left in disgraceful! We were disappointed that this house was not cleaned first as the manager knew our situation but luckily the weather was good to us. I would have to stay that as a family we have stayed in far superior accomodation both in Cornwall and Filey for similar cost.
