This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Set within landscaped grounds, this wonderful property offers spacious, grand and well-planned accommodation for an experience to be remembered.

Lumsdale House was built by the local mill owner in 1970 in the National Heritage listed conservation area in the heart of the Lumsdale Valley. It lies on the edge of Matlock, which is full of historical interest and natural beauty. Approached by electric gates and a gravelled driveway leading to a large turning circle, this beautiful property enjoys views over stunning landscaped gardens, with large ponds and various seating areas. The garden has its Joseph Paxton trademark features and has been given a whole new lease of life by the owner who is a botanical garden designer. There are various seating and dining areas and a sweeping lawn leading to a top pond which cascades into the main pond with views towards Tansley. The property itself is entered by a spacious reception hall with its original mouldings, ceiling rose, coving and oak-clad pillars either side. Guests have the choice of a drawing room or living room which has a wood-burning stove in the original stone fireplace and French doors to both sides one leading to the enclosed decking area and another set into the fabulous orangery. The orangery boasts a York flagstone floor with olive trees, a water feature, original vines and a stove, and makes a perfect place in which to enjoy a relaxing evening drink.
Within the property the breakfast kitchen is fully equipped and even has its own temperature controlled wine store and matching fridge/freezer with integrated water/ice machine. A separate study and drawing room, four large bedrooms, a single bedroom and en-suites with roll-top, freestanding claw-foot baths make this property the ideal retreat to spend time at whilst enjoying the wonderful sights of the Peak District.

A gorgeous big house. It was perfect for a weekend gathering of university friends and their expanding families! Beautiful surroundings. Well equipped and a lovely welcome pack. Thank you.

Lumsdale House is a beautiful house in a lovely location. On the whole the property was well equipped and clean. Towels, bedding, kitchen and bathrooms were spotless but some carpets and upholstery were less so and some of the pans and glasses needed a wash before use. Some minor irritations e.g. no coffee maker of any sort, no kitchen roll or clothes detergent, CD player not working. The property is ideal for adults and the children loved the space and numerous rooms for hide-and-seek , but the uncarpeted stairs and unfenced ponds are not child friendly. Parents can obviously monitor these dangers but we were not impressed to discover by accident that the boat house ground-level windows pushed open very easily and gave onto a significant and dangerous drop. It is a shame that these shortcomings took the edge off an otherwise excellent experience. Both the house and surroundings are stunning and we would have been happy to stay longer.

The location of the house was amazing, very easy to get into Matlock while also being quiet and private. The house was huge and accommodated 9 to sleep (with a further 5 visiting for lunch) very comfortably. There was plenty of equipment to cook for everyone and we all fit in the kitchen and could also sit around the lovely dining table. The only negatives were the tiny TV, patchy WiFi and that some of the sofas were very uncomfortable. These things in no way ruined our time in the house, it's just a shame when everything else was so good.

Lumsdale House was the perfect setting for a weekend away with friends. Beautiful, secluded location. Enormous property, totally exceeded our expectations. Well equipped, gorgeous fixtures and fittings, outstanding value for money. We had a fabulous time, would definitely recommend.

This was a great venue for a big group as there is so much space! All the rooms are beautiful and the dining room was perfect for our murder mystery evening. We were very comfortable here. The gardens are lovely too and a great location tucked away but a quick drive into Matlock for everything you need. Loved the waterfall over the road. WiFi struggles with a lot of people on it and doesn’t reach round the house very well but that’s to be expected with a big old house like that. My only negative is with regard to the things like glasses and cups etc. Although there was enough for everyone, it was all very miss matched so hard to give everyone the same thing e.g champagne flutes, tumblers and if having a dinner party there isn’t enough cultlery for starter and main, so had to make do. I would love to go back!

Beautiful old house, in stunning natural scenery - such a shame it is not maintained properly!(broken door handles, dirty & sticky kitchen shelves, thick layer of dust under all the beds) and that the care-taker in charge was less than helpful. WiFi signal is very poor - which would be OK, but there's no mobile reception down there. The beds' layout is rather awkward too: one of the single beds is in a corridor, while a huge walk-in closet is taking up what could be another room (completely useless for a holiday let)...

Excellent, beautiful, very spacious and homely accommodation. Very close to the town centre and all attractions. Lovely bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms, living roons, dining room and play room. Absolutely beautiful garden with lots of features. The owner was extremely helpful and accommodating and always available to answer any questions. This was our best holiday we have ever had. Many thanks.

Spent a wonderful weekend for my birthday at Lumsdale House. The house is lovely with comfy beds, soft fluffy towels and a well equipped kitchen, the gate keeper had even left a bottle of wine and a bottle of champagne for us in the fridge ! The gardens were a delight and the children loved exploring all the little nooks and crannies, and the waterfall across the lane was spectacular. We all would have loved to stay longer because we enjoyed it so much and would definitely recommend the property.
