The traditional wartime song may state it is a long way to Tipperary but the county is well placed and has easy access to adjoining counties. The rural nature of South Tipperary, coupled with its location, ensures that the land is rich and fertile, with lush rolling landscapes making for a delightful scenic vista. The towns and villages in South Tipperary are both traditional and refreshingly unassuming, meaning you immediately feel at home here.

Tipperary town is the gateway the Galtee Mountains and is surrounded by the scenic ‘Golden Vale’. Close by is the secluded Glen of Aherlow and Slievenamuck Hills. These are areas for superb hill walking and pony-trekking. The Glen of Aherlow has a number of circular cycle trails suitable for families and off road tracks through forests for mountain bikers.

One of the largest and best preserved castles in the whole of Ireland can be found at Cahir. Set on its own island in the middle of the River Suir, Cahir Castle is a fine example of medieval architecture. Also in Cahir can be found the delightful Swiss Cottage, built in the early 19th century and based upon a design by the famous John Nash. One of the most popular attractions in the area, the Swiss Cottage is the very definition of grace and elegance.

The main towns in County South Tipperary, including Cashel, Cahir and Clonmel, retain a certain charm and a sense of tradition. Clonmel is the largest of these towns and enjoys a prime position on the banks of the River Suir. Among the many historic buildings in Clonmel, you will find a number of traditional, atmospheric old pubs, perfect for a relaxing drink or a nice meal.

History is very evident in South Tipperary with many of the most popular attractions in the county being of rich historic value. Arguably the most famous of these is the Rock of Cashel, a magnificent group of historic religious buildings perched upon an outcrop of limestone. The imposing structures, looking down over the flat plains of the Golden Vale, make for an arresting sight. The nearby town of Cashel itself has a number of traditional eateries to enjoy a spot of lunch afterwards.
