Lorraine, located in north east France, borders Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg and is a region that is full of charm and strong Germanic influences which are apparent in the language and cuisine. The surrounding countryside is dotted with delightful medieval villages and spa towns and the Vosges mountains offer great recreational opportunities and wonderful views across the region.

The region is home to several interesting towns and cities. Nancy is one of France''s most attractive and historic cities and is famous for its Art Nouveau architecture. It is also home to the UNESCO listed Place Stanislas, an elegant 18th century town square. Metz, the regional capital, is another recommended destination, renowned for its Germanic architecture, the stained glass of its spectacular cathedral and beautiful public spaces. The fortress town of Verdun is renowned as the site of one of the bitterest battles of WWI and is a place of pilgrimage for those who come to remember.

In the Moselle area, there are two museums; the coal mining museum in Petite Rosselle and the mining museum in Neuchef, where you can enjoy a tour led by former miners. Close to Moselle is Sarrebourg, where you’ll find the Abreschviller Forest Steam Railway which passes through the breathtaking scenery of the surrounding mountains.

Near the German border are the Vosges Mountains with their rounded summits, pine forests and glacial lakes; here there is superb hiking and cycling trails to be discovered. There are several thousand kilometres of marked trails enabling visitors to walk and cycle the entire range, while in the winter there is enough snow for decent skiing.

The mountains provide access to spectacular scenery and breathtaking views and there are a number of spa towns throughout the area, including Vittel, famous for its mineral water. Domremy-la-Pucelle, located to the north west is the birthplace of Joan of Arc.

Another area of natural beauty to explore is The Lorraine Regional Nature Park, a vast area of forest and countryside which is dotted with castles, forts and abbeys. The park is renowned for its rivers, lakes and salt marshes making it a popular destination for water-sports enthusiasts and anglers.
