English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Enjoy a special occasion at this property, where gourmet meals can be arranged and which also has its own hot tub.

Nestling in the pretty Norfolk countryside close to the heart of the Norfolk Broads, Willow Barn and single-storey Beech Barn are detached holiday properties dating back to the 1700s, situated in the grounds of the owner’s home. Providing a perfect retreat for discerning larger family groups, these converted barns offer spacious and comfortable accommodation boasting beamed interiors, wood-burning stoves and enclosed separate gardens with private hot tubs, and for a special meal or family celebration gourmet meals can be arranged with the owner. Beech Farm Barns are ideally located for all the family and for nature lovers there is an abundance of bird life. Within walking distance is Alderfen Broad, which is situated in The Broads National Park, a bird watcher’s delight. For the children there is BeWILDerwood Adventure Park with its treehouses, zip wires, jungle bridges and boat trips, which all combined makes a great day out. Nearby is the attractive Broads village of Horning with its selection of tea shops, restaurants and pubs. A day boat can be hired directly from the owner, or book a trip on the Mississippi steamer. The sandy beaches of the North Norfolk Coast are only 10 miles away. Alternatively spend a day in the fine city of Norwich with its magnificent cathedrals, castle, museums, theatres, market and vast array of cafes and shops. There is a wealth of National Trust properties to visit in the area which include Felbrigg Hall, Garden and Park (one of the finest 17th-century country Jacobean houses in East Anglia), Blickling Hall (a magnificent house with woodlands and lakeside walks) and Sheringham Park (beautifully landscaped and renowned for its spectacular displays of azaleas and rhododendrons in late spring). Shops and pub 1½ miles.

Beech Barn (CZU) can be booked together with Willow Barn (CZB) to accommodate up to 18 guests.

We had an absolutely amazing time here. The place looks so much better in person. Having the hot tub was brilliant. The place itself was easy to find, all you could hear was the birds tweeting.

Good base for the Broads and the coast. Even in the middle of winter we found plenty to entertain our large group. The hot tub was a big hit.

As a location for a family gathering the barn was comfy and cosy but spacious. The bedrooms with their en suites was a definite plus as was the hot tub which was extensively used despite freezing temperatures at this time of year. The kitchen was well equipped and we were made to feel very welcome.

Love house, but just a few small missing things which would make a massive difference. Things like local information book, taxi numbers, restaurants and that kind of thing. Larger mirrors near sockets for drying hair, shower heads that stay up, towels sets per person maybe better quality.

The basic house was fine but facilities such as Tv for the children was poor( would have liked Sky/ satellite). Internet was also poor and the area was not to our liking. With mixed weather in October there was very little to keep the young children entertained. Although we knew the house had no doors to the upstairs bedrooms we did not appreciate how annoying this can be when young children wake early and need food in the kitchen diner or tv in the lounge.

Willow Barn was in a very idyllic quiet location, perfect for dog walking and relaxing as a large family for a 70th birthday weekend away. The wifi is non existent in some locations of the property, with teenagers and kids this resulted in them being in bedrooms where the wifi was good a lot of the time, the wifi in the communal lounge and kitchen/dining areas was quite poor. The owner was very helpful and located right next door. The two rooms upstairs were very spacious but do not have doors, they are open plan, which was not a concern for us but if you have younger kids sleeping upstairs, could be slightly disturbing to them.

A fabulous location and lovely friendly owners next door. Sleeping was an issue due to small single beds and foot boards on all beds. The two upstairs biggest bedrooms did not have doors. Other than sleeping the property was great. The holiday was enjoyable with lots of activities for all ages.

We had a few issues with our stay. On the first two nights we had a mini invasion of hornets in the house. There was clearly a nest somewhere which the owner dealt with promptly the next day. We had 6 children between us and we were obviously concerned for their safety therefore we had to stay in one room with them on the first night. The set up of the rooms is strange. It would have been helpful to have a floor plan before booking or even some kind of description about the layout of the rooms. The two upstairs rooms are via separate staircases with no doors on the rooms. One of the rooms came off the living room which meant we had to remain quite quiet during the evenings as we had children in that room. The WiFi signal was abysmal. Even network coverage was bad. Might not be such a bad thing for some but we really needed it. The place needs updating. The beds were very very uncomfortable with the springs digging into you at night. Even if they just put some toppers on it might help a bit. There is no lock on one of the upstairs bathrooms therfore an increased lack of privacy. And also the smell, possibly from the septic tank was overwhelming in one of the downstairs rooms. The sofas were also uncomfortable, could do with replacing. The outside lights didn't work and it would have been nice if there was some nice garden furniture or even a bbq to use in the lovely garden. Hot tub was great. All these things were not ideal, however we overcame then and had an enjoyable holiday. The owner was quick to respond to our needs which was helpful.

It was a little disappointing that the largest bedrooms had 3 beds and the rest of the bedrooms were quite small. Also there it would have been nice if someone came in to clean at least once a week. The kitchen facilities and living space were nice and spacious and adequate.
