Absolutely loved the fact that phone and internet services were poor. A very peaceful and restful week. The owners were very friendly and helpful, would definitely return.

Calmness, tranquility, dark skies and wildlife, this issue wonderful location and thank goodness for no phone signal, although WiFi was useful and worked perfectly well. The setting is lovely and the barn is comfortable, spacious and well equipped. We turned the sofa round to permanently watch the woodpeckers and other wildlife! Only things we didn't like were the very uncomfortable dining chairs and would have preferred both bathrooms to have showers rather than a roll top bath, but appreciate that's very subjective. Beautiful part of the world, hope to go back !

Very comfortable and well equipped. Remote position meant it was peaceful and relaxing with lots of wildlife. Lots of amenities available within 1/2 hour drive which we expected

We had a really relaxing holiday . The cottage was in a very quiet area but it took us no time at all to get out and about to other places . Our only disappointment was that there was no internet and there hadn't been any since 10th of January apparently . We feel we should have been informed of this as my husband did need to do some work whilst he was there . There was also no phone signal which is nobody's fault but without either we were struggling at times !!

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your response. The Old Carthouse finally went live with the Internet in the middle of April, so it would seem you just missed it, sorry. It is not a brilliant signal, but we are thankful for anything at all as they have been trying since January!!

I spent four weeks in the Old Carthouse so probably am more qualified than most shorter stay clients to give an assessment. It became my home for those four weeks and I found it a very comfortable house with all the amenities I needed not too far away. I loved the village of Steyning. Everyone in the many delightful shops was so friendly and dog tolerant which is important My dog Bella and I had many walks directly from the house in lovely woodlands. I was pleased to be able to let her off the leash which was not possible at my next letting. Mr & Mrs Hammond were very helpful and their dogs were great playmates for Bella. All in all a very pleasant stay.

The old Carthouse is located in a lovely spot - perfect for our annual girls weekend away in the quiet. Good to have someone nearby but in our own space. The barn was really well heated- so we didn't actually use the woodburner which was one of our main reasons for renting here! Kitchen had enough for a weekend catering, long kitchen table( excellent for 1000 piece jigsaw!) and comfy sitting room area. Scrummy cake and pot of milk and basics like washing up liq/ cling film etc on arrival , and an extended check out on Sunday am ( 10 am after a Friday evening check in is really tight- so appreciate being able to stay until midday for a lie in) very much appreciated. Would have loved a few things differently - for the log burner to have been cleaned out and glass doors cleared of finger marks, before we got there, as small things. Dining chairs look lovely, but aren't comfy. The main thing was for there not to have been a fly problem inside - they were landing in food and loads found dead every morning. Not nice. A few networks get phone signal, but the signage in the dark is hard on arrival- be aware, as you might not be able to call your fellow renters! CD player also cuts out ( we found!) - so would suggest an iPod speaker deck. Oh and bring some extra loo roll if doing a weekend rental! Summer nights must be lovely here - there's a decking and seats. For a weekend rental in Sussex for 4 adults it was slightly above average cost than we've had before. The open plan kitchen / diner and large floor plan made it good. Flies took it down a bit. We'd go back , but it wasn't one of our top three.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments. We now have cushions that can be used on the kitchen chairs. Due to the very mild autumn, we did have an issue with flies, but this is the first year that it has been an issue. There is now an iPod speaker in the property, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I'm not sure if it was just the time of year, and an unusually hot October, but we had a terrible issue with flies. There were hundreds of them up in the ceiling and they were literally dropping like flies! We had to hoover up about 6 times a day to get rid of all the dead ones on the floor. I know I should have done my homework, but I was only advised of there being absolutely no phone signal or internet connection when I called a couple of days prior to our visit. I do think this is something that should be advertised when booking the accommodation, and not left to you to have to go through all the reviews. I found it a bit strange that as the owners lived onsite, that they didn't once come and see if everything was okay or introduce themselves. That said it was a good location for what we were visiting for and a bonus to be able to take the dog (paid for obviously), but personally I would not stay here again. Very pleasant I suppose but had it's downfalls.
