Description

Pretty two storey holiday cottage right beside the village stream. Picturesque village location on the famous NYM’s steam railway line.

With origins dating back to 1210, this former water mill occupies a unique riverside setting, quite literally a stones throw from Goathland station. Set peacefully away within lush gardens that are a haven for wildlife, The Mill offers an ideal base from which to explore the rugged splendour of the North York Moors National Park, where bridleways and footpaths abound. Watch steam trains from the comfort of the bed, or better still, hop on board and head for nearby Pickering or Whitby and the wonderful independent shops and restaurants there. York and Helmsley are both within an hour. Shop and pub 1/4 mile.

Spacious, beamed living/dining room with wood-burning stove/kitchen with river views and tiled floor. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Lower ground floor: Double bedroom with TV. Twin bedroom. Shower room with toilet.

Absolutely brilliant cottage, warm and welcoming with a welcome pack of essentials and treats. The cottage is so clean and the fire is built ready light and the living area is so spacious. This was our 4th New Year at the cottage with friends so that should indicate how much we love it - the Christmas tree is up and lit as we arrive with an array of luxury presents underneath to spoil us. The area is stunning too winter or summer with loads of walking and cycling routes straight from the door and a short drive away. The steam railway never fails to impress both travelling on it or watching it pass by the cottage window across the river and waterfalls. A 5 star cottage in our opinion.

The Mill is an outstanding holiday cottage in the most beautiful setting next to the river/stream. The cottage is furnished to a very high standard and has everything anyone could possibly need for their stay. It is very clean, comfortable and so cosy and warm, which is wonderful to return to after a walk on the snowy freezing moors. It is a fabulous holiday cottage that I would highly recommend to anyone.

2nd time we've stayed at The Mill. Beautiful house in an amazing setting with fantastic walks. Lovely to stay in a village with 2 hotels and a pub all serving delicious food. The mill has everything you need for a relaxing, comfortable holiday

This is a really wonderful holiday cottage. Superbly clean and comfortable with everything you could possibly want in the house. The location is idyllic - beside rushing water, steam trains going past the window, plenty of lovely walks right from the house. 20mins to the beautiful coast and Whitby, and under an hour to York. We were a little worried about the river being so close as we have children but there is a good solid fence the whole way along. There is one unfenced drop in the garden (which is pointed out in the owners welcome instructions) but otherwise there are fences and gate everywhere. The shops in the village are very tourist orientated so for food you'll need to go further a field but this was no problem.

The Mill Cottage had the most dreadful dank mouldy smell to it. It was so bad that I couldn't sleep the first night and opening the windows to air the place out let in 0000s of insects and spiders. The smell permeated all my clothing and hair. I had to wash absolutely everything, including my sneakers, upon arriving home. Im attributing the dankness to the fact it's right on a river. Also, I was very disappointed that there was no tumble dryer so it was very difficult to dry any washing. The cottage was clean and nicely appointed.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your feedback. I can confirm there is no damp in the property and I have not had any previous complaints as can be seen from my previous reviews.

This property is ideally situated in the village of Goathland, which has a number of pubs, cafes and shops. The North Yorkshire Moors railway runs alongside the property so it is a must for any steam railway enthusiast. There are plenty of walks from the property across the Moors or down into Grosmont.
