English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Description

One of five holiday homes with swimming pool, gym and tennis courts on site. Quiet, secluded location only five miles from Bamburgh.

"Ideal base for a family holiday...set between the Cheviots and the sea"

Tucked away in a peaceful and secluded village setting, these five comfortably furnished holiday cottages are set in an idyllic location, only 5 miles from the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and one of the longest sandy beaches in England, and within a few minutes’ drive of Seahouses, where regular boat trips depart for the Farne Islands. Between the Cheviots and the sea, there is easy touring through the beautiful countryside with its numerous castles, stately homes and NT properties. Furnished to a high standard, and close to the owners’ home, Fordson offers single-storey accommodation and Ferguson is a detached two-storey cottage. The Mill House stands as a detached converted barn, with Waren View and The Granary Cottage forming an adjoining pair. This is an ideal choice for family holidays, with use of a very pleasant lawned area by a stream where visitors can enjoy barbecues. There is also shared use of the owners’ hard tennis court nearby.
Warenford Village serves as an excellent base from which to discover Northumberland and the Scottish border country. Just 4 miles distant lies Budle Bay, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an SSSI, with the ancient walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (15 miles) and the Duchess of Northumberland’s ornamental gardens a short drive away. Created to rival the best in Europe, the gardens are contemporary in design and include waterfalls and cascading plumes set within landscaped grounds with themed planted areas. Also sure to delight both young and old alike is a visit to neighbouring Alnwick Castle, which served as the location for the Harry Potter films. Home of the Percy family, it stands as the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle, with some of its rooms open to the public and displaying a wealth of decorative and fine art.
Within easy reach, too, is Holy Island – renowned for its medieval religious heritage, priory and picturesque castle – and also known by its Anglo-Saxon name of Lindisfarne. Accessed by a paved causeway at low tide, the island is popular with bird-watchers and nature lovers, with the north-western portion of the island being maintained as a nature reserve, where terns, plovers and seals can be observed. Whilst on the island, a trip to The Museum of Island Life will reveal former living and working conditions there, and St Aidan’s Winery tempts visitors with its sweet concoction of local Lindisfarne Mead.
There are quiet country lanes for cycling and several excellent golf courses nearby, as well as a selection of shops in Belford (3 miles) and good inns and restaurants in which to enjoy a family meal locally – the nearest pub with restaurant being just 30 yards.
Guests may relax in our recently developed indoor swimming pool and sauna or work out in the gym, built close to the cottages. Shop/24-hr garage 1 mile.

The cottage was warm, had a well equipped kitchen /diner and there was plenty of hot water. It was a nice touch with the tea tray and some treats .We also had the advantage of enjoying the swimming pool and sauna which was located in another building about 30m away. Disappointed in the bathroom which needed updating and the beds were uncomfortable too. Luckily we have stayed in the area before and knew where to go for supplies however it would be a positive for further guests if there was a welcome pack that included information about nearest shops, doctors, chemists, places of interest, recycling amenities etc. Big bonus was having The Swan hotel across the road which served delicious food.

The reason I have given this low score is because of the cleanliness of the site. The cottage was dirty, my wife even found a thong from the pervious occupants. The site facilities were really good it's just a shame the pool and sauna had mold on the floors and I returned home with an ear infection which I believe is as a result of the poor pool hygiene. Its a shame because we would visit again if the cleaning was for a higher standard.

Granary Cottage was clean, comfortable and well furnished; the kitchen was well- equipped. The availability of a pool and sauna - also very clean - was most welcome, though we didn't use the tennis courts. It could be argued that the twin room was rather "snug" in terms of space, but overall the bedrooms were comfortable and agreeably presented. the provision of tea, coffee and biscuits for use on arrival was a thoughtful touch for travellers. The village is small but the pub is welcoming and access to some of Northumberland's finest locations is easy using this cottage as a base. Overall, we were delighted with our stay.

Easy to review as it is in a lovely area, close to some of the Northumberland coastal favourites. Easy to find and good parking.

Nice cottage with well stocked cupboards. The pool was a hit with the kids & the peaceful location a hit with the adults.

I enjoyed my week away and loved the location. Only 5 miles to the beach and if you have the car then there is no problem to travel. I noticed the local bus times were very good too. When we arrived there was a welcome pack which was a lovely gesture. The swimming pool, gym and sauna are fantastic as is the tennis court. My only disappointment was the cleanliness of the cottage. Little places like under the couches etc. and in corners. All bedding and towels were immaculate as were the kitchen appliances and crockery / utensils etc. Just a little bit more observation. I do appreciate the timescale in the busy weeks of summer, which leaves little time to clean . I myself cleaned the little areas that had been missed. If everyone cleaned before they left it would make a big difference to these beautiful cottages. All in all it wasn't too bad and I would not hesitate to return to this cottage.

Excellent cottage, great location for exploring Northumberland. Local friendly pub. The pool and sauna were great. Would definitely stay again, only drawback was pricing for school holidays, not sure who's fault that is but week before holidays nearly £300 cheaper!
