Description

Play croquet on the private lawn - families or groups of friends will be impressed by this 18th-century former barn.

Less than an hour from London by train or car, in the South Downs National Park, this detached 18th-century former barn is set in the owner’s grounds, in the heart of this quintessentially English village with pub, green and cricket pitch. An ideal weekend get-away for families or groups of friends, it has a one-acre private garden with croquet lawn, mature specimen plants including a 300-year old cedar tree and an outside terrace with table and chairs for 10 - an ideal spot to enjoy al-fresco dining - as well as a detached heated games room with pool table, table tennis and table football. Inside, along with wonderful original features including exposed stone walls, flagstone and brick floors and beams, there is a wood-burning stove, an Aga and an oak dining table, whilst the bedrooms have Victorian bedsteads and deep mattresses. The 16th-century Red Lion pub, 400 yards away on the village green, is the starting point for numerous walks, cycle, bridle trails and a launch site for hot-air balloon flights. Black Down, the highest point in the National Park, with its pine and heather covered slopes is immediately accessible on foot. Within a 15-minute drive is Petworth with its antique shops, beautiful stately home, Capability Brown gardens and open-air concerts, and charming Midhurst, famous for polo at Cowdray Park. Goodwood is 20 minutes away with its motor and horse racing, as well as numerous other National Trust houses and gardens. Chichester and West Wittering with its award-winning sandy beach are half an hour away. Shops 600 yards, pub 400 yards.

This is the best cottage we have ever rented. The building itself is superbly refurbished, keeping the traditional feel but with all the modern amenities you would expect... plus some you wouldn't, such as sky movies! Details such as this and the teddy bears around the cottage gave the feeling of staying in real luxury. Plus, of course, the games room - something for everyone. The garden is stunning (photos do not do it justice) - ideal for children to explore or just to relax and unwind. Finally, the hosts could not have been more welcoming - always available if needed but never invading our privacy. I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough - just book it!!

Great location lovely walks and pubs very close by. Large back garden with plenty of seating and games. Welcome daffodils nice touch. Our party was large 9 adults and one toddler we all managed to fit in comfortably. Downstairs wet room could do with an upgrade but apart from that we all enjoyed the cottage.

Beautiful property, great location in gorgeous English village complete with church, village green and super pub. Very helpful owners. We went in winter so enjoyed the huge log fire but imagine the gardens are fantastic in the summer.

The cottage was wonderful. Very clear instructions on how to get there and a property full of character. The open plan kitchen/dining/living room meant it was very sociable and whoever was cooking could still be involved with everyone. The kitchen was very well equipped and the aga nice and hot. They even provided a basket of wood to get the fire going on the first night. It was furnished beautifully and really felt like home. The pub was less than a 5min walk away which had great food and there were also plenty of walks. It was the perfect house for a weekend getaway with friends and I would recommend it to friends and family. Thanks for a great stay Helen.

We spent a Friday to Monday celebrating a family birthday with 10 of us staying and others coming in for the Saturday evening. The place had all the facilities we needed and it was warm and cosy, despite being January. It had a great atmosphere, slightly quirky in it's layout but that added to it's charm for all of us, including 3 young children. We were newby's to cooking with an Aga but a short brief from Helen got us underway.
