Description

Surrounded by 200 acres of parkland this delightful cottage is ideal for exploring the Border country.

The 200 acres of glorious parkland surrounding Mellerstain House, one of Scotland’s grandest stately homes, designed and built by William and Robert Adam, provide a wonderful setting for these three delightful cottages (S4166, S4568 & S4569). Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds including the fabulous Italian-style terraced gardens which command panoramic views over the lake to the distant Cheviot Hills. The scenic and historic attractions of the Border country are all close at hand and the beaches of Berwick and Holy Island are also easily accessible. Kelso (6 miles) offers shops, inns and restaurants and is home of Floors Castle and the famous Kelso Horse Races, whilst Edinburgh, with its magnificent castle, museums, galleries and excellent shopping, is only a 35 mile drive. Fly fishing can be arranged locally, several golf courses are nearby and shops and pubs are just 3.5 miles away. Beautifully appointed and very comfortable, these three properties offer a unique holiday opportunity. West Lodge, ref S4166, is a charming 18th-century stone cottage enjoying its own garden with splendid views towards the Cheviots. Clock House, ref S4568, has been beautifully converted to a high standard to form part of the Old Clock House dating from the early 18th century. Adjoining the Clock House is Courtyard Cottage, ref S4569, which has also been lovingly converted to a high standard and boasts three en-suite bedrooms. The courtyard coffee shop serves delicious home cooking on ‘house open’ days - and special occasions, large and small can be catered for by arrangement in the state rooms of Mellerstain House. Shop and pub 7 miles.

Ground floor: Living/dining area/kitchen. Separate toilet. First floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double (four poster), 1 twin. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

A week of complete rest & relaxation . A very spacious cottage that has everything required to fulfil it's self catering status. However did feel the cottage was in need of a more detailed clean - cobwebs may give character but not behind cushions on chairs etc.. Also some general maintenance required. Location scenic & good to enjoy walks . Will feel remote though & network signals very poor. For peace and quiet I would strongly recommend.

We loved having the grounds of this minor stately home almost totally to ourselves in the morning and evening. The cafe which is open 4 days a week does very nice cakes. The one problem was that the kitchen area was small and not well equipped for cooking e.g. there was no baking tray. If you plan to prepare food I would suggest bringing your own sharp knives.

A well equipped cottage in a wonderful setting. Nothing whatsoever to criticise - there is nothing I would change.
