The cottage was cold when we arrived. The decor is old and tired looking and the seating in the living room is uncomfortable. While all the bathroom and kitchen items were clean the soft furnishings looked dusty and worn.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We were somewhat shocked and disappointed to read the comments from our guest, especially since this is the first adverse comment we have had. Most of our guests use phrases in the visitors' book or to us directly such as, "cottage very comfortable" or, "like home from home". Many of our guests return to Taigh Mhairi - some more than once. All the other 7 reviews on the website are favourable with an overall score of 8.0. The main heating for the cottage is by electric night storage heater. If the weather has been warm the previous guests might have switched these off and we would only spot this when we did the changeover on the Saturday morning. The heaters would not then charge up until that night and so everything would be warm by Sunday morning. However, there is perfectly adequate "instant heat" available in the form of a convector heater in the kitchen, an electric fire in the lounge (plus fuel for an open fire), a wall-mounted fan heater in the bathroom and electric panel heaters in both bedrooms. We have aimed to undertake major redecorating/maintenance work on an annual basis, but because our property is so popular we have a somewhat limited "window" in which to do this. Last autumn, however, we spent several thousand pounds replacing facias, soffits, guttering and downpipes at the cottage to ensure that it was fully rain-proofed. We intend to redecorate some more rooms in the close season. No-one has ever complained about the comfort of the seating in the lounge, but we are planning to get the suite recovered in the near future. Finally, we take great exception to the score of 5.0 for Cleanliness. We are extremely meticulous in cleaning all surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom (this was at least acknowledged!) on a weekly basis and likewise we always give all floors a thorough vacuuming. Dusting of other surfaces in the lounge and bedrooms tends to be on a two-weekly cycle because of time constraints. No-one else has ever complained of poor standards of cleanliness.

The cottage was perfect for what we wanted - a quiet, comfortable base for exploring Skye. Easy to heat with lots of heaters/real fire. Brilliant position, well equipped, with thoughtful touches like providing binoculars. Friendly and receptive host. Pushed for areas to improve, the décor might benefit from a make over and a couple of cleaning areas to attend to (smelly oven!). Overall excellent value for money, great holiday base.

This cottage was very well equipped, spotlessly clean and ideally situated within 10 minutes walk from the centre of Portree. Although the owners lived next door the only contact we had was to enquire if everything was ok for us. They were on hand if we needed anything but kept very much in the background. The cottage was warm and cosy and lovely to come home to after a day out exploring the surrounding beauty spots. The only thing missing was a tumble dryer which was mentioned in the description.

Had a great time on Skye staying here. Plenty of room for 2 adults and 2 children. Easy to walk into centre of Portree via a woodland walk that the kids loved. Easy to get to anywhere north of the Cullins as cul-de-sac is off main road. Owners are lovely and are happy to leave you to enjoy your holiday but are next door if you need them. Will stay here again next time I visit Skye.
