In a setting of stunning natural beauty in the Exmoor National Park, with indoor heated swimming pool, Triscombe Farm Country Cottages are a combination of 19th century cottages and skilful conversions from existing farm buildings. Leisure facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, games room (pool table and table tennis) and all-weather tennis court (please bring your own racquets and balls). Natural water is provided from our own spring. With unspoilt countryside all around, and reached by a long, sweeping driveway, the country cottages are nestling in a sheltered, wooded valley overlooking the River Quarme. Each of the cottages has been individually styled and equipped to offer comfortable holiday accommodation and are all located at the heart of the farm (wellies advisable during wet weather).
The cottages make the perfect base for holidays at any time of the year. A stream cascades through the hillside garden, there is ample space in which to sit and relax, or enjoy a family picnic or barbecue. Spectacular views across the valley to Dunkery Beacon unfold as you wander around. Badgers, buzzards, foxes, red deer and an abundance of birdlife can often be seen, so don’t forget your binoculars. Bracken Cottage ref: B5817, Juniper ref: 28060 and Primrose Cottage ref: 30027 are ground floor cottages, Rose Cottage ref: B5810 is believed to be the original farmhouse and Whortleberry Cottage ref: 29890 a skillful conversion has a large living room, ideal for family get togethers, Coachman’s Cottage ref: B5813 is a spacious original cottage and Garden Cottage ref: B5812 and Orchard Cottage ref: B5811 once polo pony stables with flats above are ‘upside down’ cottages with farmland views. Stream Cottage ref: 27550 is the original farm manager’s cottage.

Exmoor Safaris take you right into the heart of this area of heather clad moors, sheltered wooded combes, pretty villages with thatched cottages and ancient packhorse bridges. The National Park rangers provide guided walks.
A few miles from Triscombe is Exmoor’s spectacular, breathtaking and beautiful northern coast, the highest in Britain, with sheltered bays and where steep cliffs plunge into the sea. You can enjoy fantastic coastal walks here along the cliff top coastal path, with dramatic views of the coastline and out to sea. From Dunkery Beacon (1707ft) there are panoramic views to Wales, Dartmoor and beyond. Minehead is only 10 miles away with a beach, Butlin’s, harbour and variety of pubs and restaurants, as well as the fantastic famous West Somerset steam railway. A beautiful place, gorgeous views and quiet roads. Downside was that the cottage was extremely cold and the electric heaters insufficient and very expensive. We paid a premium price for the time of year and then had to pay heating on top. Wore our coats inside and out. No phone signal or internet which I guess is acceptable when you are out in the sticks but they need to make that very clear. Games room disappointing too, cold and Ill equipped!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We were extremely disappointed to read this review. The guest arrived to a warm cottage and welcome of freshly baked cream tea with a generous portion of clotted cream and tasty jam. If guests decide to turn the heating off & wear coats that is something out of the Owners control. Electricity is charged as advertised at cost in the accommodation only from the time of check in to check out. There is only one other cottage complex locally who offer similar facilities and an indoor heated pool, for similar accommodation for the same week there the tariff was significantly more than that paid for Orchard. Electricity also being charged by meter reading. Rather than paying "a premium price" this holiday was therefore a "bargain break". The Games room is as advertised with cues, bats & balls provided. There is heating in the games room which guests can turn on or off as they wish and for which there is no charge. Wi-Fi is free of charge and is password protected. Both Wi-Fi and EE Mobile phone coverage, as explained in the Guest information file, is determined by the rural National Park location and totally out of our control. Prior to February Half Term, Orchard had also had some redecoration, a new 32 inch TV & some of the living room furniture replaced with new. All the positives not known before arrival have been overlooked by Orchards Guests and we therefore feel that other factors out of our control impacted negatively on the holiday experience which is reflected in the review score of 3. Exmoor, an often forgotten part of England, is a beautiful place with stunning views, heather clad moorland, spectacular coast line and offers activities and attractions to suit all ages. As Cottage Owners, our aim is to ensure a warm welcome, enjoyable holiday at a reasonable cost; therefore we give guests some control of their holiday cost with electricity at cost and the option of towel hire.

The cottage itself is really nice, although we would have preferred central heating, 2 double rooms and 2 bathrooms but the kitchen was well equipped apart from the knives need updating. It’s very remote and you can’t walk to a shop or pub which hinders things if you want a quick drink or pint of milk. We would have rather paid for the heating up front in the bill than worry about how much we were spending on heating. The pool was lovely and it was good to have washing facilities in the grounds. Not too far from Minehead beach where there is a nice beach and a few supermarkets. Would of been nice for owners to offer a breakfast service if wanted. Shame there was no open fire or wood burner as would have been nice to be warm by the fire in the evening. Shower was a little old.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; This guest and her family chose to book this self catering accommodation which is a holiday let as photographed and advertised as being rural, within a National Park. Reading the guests comments, we feel they chose and booked the wrong type of accommodation and location for their family's needs, which is reflected in the 6/10 score but something totally out of our control.

This cottage is in a good location but does need some renovation. There is an issue with damp which you smell as you walk in. The damp is mainly behind the beds and around windows. This caused my husbands asthma to play up. Our clothes were getting damp from being in the wardrobes. For the money charged for this property a couple of things need to be brought up to scratch. The TV is the size of a computer monitior. It doesn't cost much to replace with a larger screened tv which in the typical English weather or on a night in would be a nicer touch. The bathroom needs updating with a modern shower and more consistent water temperature. It was very hard to shower without it going very hot on you and the shower head was very small. Again, a nice shower is something you would expect for the money paid. The games room on site also needs some renovation. If was made clear that the owners have had some problems with damage and while we were there we saw that someone had damaged the windowsill. However the smell of damp in there is very bad and you have to pay for the pool table. The swimming pool is very nice and this area is done well. The gardens are lovely too and the tennis court is OK.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your feedback. Orchard has been checked with a damp meter and there are no recordings of damp in the property and therefore refute the comments. The TV screen is a normal TV screen size of 22 inches and therefore larger than the standard computer, which is I believe reducing from 15 6 inches to 14 inches. Unfortunately despite the fact we have a bike store we discovered one of the guests had in fact kept a bike inside the property. Our property is graded 4 stars in accordance with the Visit England guidelines and as can be evidenced from our previous reviews the majority of our guests are happy. Therefore we are naturally very disappointed to have received this review.

Really enjoyed our stay at Orchard Cottage. Beautiful setting with peace and quiet in abundance. The cottage was almost perfect. Well kitted out, clean and comfortable. Exactly what we were after. The swimming pool is also fantastic. Only two things let it down slightly, in my opinion. The shower really needs upgrading to an electric one. Very difficult to find a decent temperature using the mixer taps and the shower head itself wasn't great. The games room could also do with upgrading, especially in terms of the equipment. Snooker cues had broken tips on them, the rubber is peeling off the table tennis bats and the room had a very damp feel and smell to it. Just needs a wee bit of TLC. One other disappointment for us was that although it's only a mile and a half away, the local pub is pretty much inaccessible unless you drive there. The roads to and from the pub are not suitable for walking on, especially at night with a couple of beers in you! Overall though, highly recommended and we would definitely stay here again.
