English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Unique, thatched cottage, heavily beamed, inglenook fireplace and open fires, ideal for couples and larger groups of family.

Once used as a hunting lodge, this 14th/15th-century, heavily beamed, thatched cottage with later additions is now a unique holiday home. Surrounded by open countryside this is a quintessential detached English country cottage. Internally Old High Hall provides spacious well-furnished accommodation with many antiques, and open fires in both the living room and dining room. Outside there is a terrace where guests may enjoy a glass of wine, and two acres of delightful gardens (including two fenced ponds). Old High Hall is perfect for couples or family holidays. The ancient village of Wickhambrook is made up of 11 greens which are believed to date back to Anglo Saxon times. With a village shop and local pubs it provides for everyday needs and is ideally located to explore the surrounding Suffolk towns and villages. Equidistant between the towns of Bury St. Edmunds and Newmarket, 8 miles, visitors can enjoy a day out at the races, a visit to the cathedral and abbey gardens or enjoy a play in the Georgian playhouse built in 1819. Also within easy driving distance are the picturesque villages of Lavenham and Long Melford and the town of Sudbury. There are several National Trust properties in the area including Ickworth House, 6 miles, and Kentwell Hall, 7 miles. Also less than half an hour’s drive is the city of Cambridge with its famous colleges, botanic gardens, museums and galleries. Horse riding and golf nearby. Shop ½ mile, pub 600 yards.

Large, beamed living room with open fire in brick fireplace with old bread oven and French doors. Large, beamed living/dining room with open fire inglenook fireplace and brick floor. Beamed fitted well-equipped kitchen with granite work surfaces and tiled floor. Utility. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with shower attachment and toilet. First floor: Some areas of low ceiling on corridor. Two beamed double bedrooms; one with feature brick wall, one with en-suite bathroom with corner bath, shower attachment, bidet and toilet. A very large period property with large garden backing onto fields. In easy reach of many places of interest. The accommodation is spacious, but one bedroom is on the third floor away from the first floor toilet and bathroom; okay for the younger element with you on holiday! Overall a delightful quite restful break can be enjoyed at this location.

Lovely old spacious house, beds comfy, plenty of living space. Knew beforehand about the lack of power showers which wasn't a problem as lots of good baths. Only downside was the dining area, the chairs were uncomfortable and the raised dining area was potentially dangerous if you pushed your chair too far back.

Old High Hall has great character and obvious history, but could do with a little more tlc. Walk in showers, more space in the kitchen, enough chairs at the table to seat all 10 guests, and fires possible in all (not just some) lounge fireplaces - for the price, we had hoped for these. Beautiful gardens though, and a magnificent looking property from the outside.

It was lovely to be welcomed by the caretaker and shown around the house. As we were staying only three days it was good to have logs provided for the open fire. The kitchen was well equipped and the main living room was very comfortable. We liked having an open fire and felt very comfortable. The downstairs bedroom was very cold and we would have liked a proper shower somewhere in the house. However, we enjoyed the historical features of the cottage and had plenty of space for our party. It was good value for money.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; The house contains 4 bathrooms, all of which have shower attachments, as described on the website. As previously noted and despite numerous attempts, we regret but are unable to install walk in showers or upright showers within the baths for this property as the floors are uneven and the ceilings are too low to install shower heads and glass shower cabinets or glass screens or bath panels, all of which are too high. Please rest assured that we have already explored these options on numerous occasions without success. As regards the ground floor bedroom, we note the concern. However, please note that there is a very large double radiator in that room, which is piping hot and the room is adjacent to the boiler, so it is not a question of providing adequate heating. The room however has numerous windows on 3 sides facing the garden, which may be a problem but these are covered with thick, lined, top quality handmade curtains. Thick duvets and extra blankets are naturally provided. We also have extra electric heaters available both in the utility room and garage for use by guests if necessary. There is really nothing further that owners can do to ameliorate the structure of this room, which forms part of the oldest part of this listed house and contains an Elizabethan window and cannot be altered in any way.
