English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

A large holiday home positioned right by the River Thurne with its own private mooring and attractive views from the first floor balcony.

Enjoying a beautiful waterfront location, these three holiday properties (refs CBBH, CBBJ and CYY) have their own private mooring and superb views over the River Thurne and a National Trust wildlife reserve (which featured in the BBC1 TV series Secret Britain). Both Ferry View, standing detached, and Heigham View, one of a pair, have a games room with full size snooker and table tennis tables and offer spacious accommodation for larger groups, as well as a first floor balcony where guests can take in the abundant birdlife. Heigham View additionally has the benefit of a second sitting room/games room with 65in 3D TV with blue-ray/DVD and surround sound. Ferry Cottage is a detached, two-bedroomed property with rooms all on the ground floor. All offer the very best in waterside living. For the fisherman, this part of the Broads offers some of the best coarse fishing anywhere in the UK (fishing licence required). For the nature enthusiast, everything is on the doorstep - walking and cycling can be enjoyed along a network of quiet lanes and the river and the Broads can be explored by boat, which can be hired directly from the owner. Winterton-on-Sea is a short drive away with its wonderful sandy beach and dunes. This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the north beach is home to a colony of grey seals.
The BeWILDerwood Outdoor Adventure Park at Horning offers treehouses, zip wires, jungle bridges and more - all adding up to a great day out for children. The fine city of Norwich with its cathedrals, castle, museums, theatre and vast array of cafes and shops is half an hour away. There is a wealth of National Trust properties to visit in the area, which include Felbrigg Hall, Garden and Park (one of the finest Jacobean houses in East Anglia), the beautifully landscaped Sheringham Park and the magnificent Blickling Hall with its woodland and lakeside walks. Horsey Wind Pump is only 3 miles away (and a good destination for a boat trip).
For a special meal or family celebration a gourmet meal can be arranged with the owner. There are shops and pubs in the village 1 mile away.

Enjoyed every aspect except some flaky electrics. 1 socket or 1 toaster blew the trip switch when used and 1 set of bathroom lights did not work.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Ferry View being a great option for our group of five adult couples as everyone had their own bathroom. The location was amazing looking out over the river and the fields giving us continual visual interest with birds and other wildlife all making appearances. The central living area - the kitchen, dining and lounge seating area - made it a very sociable area for us all be together. The games room downstairs was also well used by all. However we were surprised that there was not a second television, possibly to be located in the games room, which would have given an alternative choice of viewing especially when in such a large group. We all did feel the house was in need of some updating and TLC - but we understand that the property had recently been sold on and so possible enhancements were on hold until new owners are in situ. We would like to know as and when this might happen and if any improvements are to be made. Thank you.

Ferry View is the ultimate destination to get away from things in a group party. As a group of 9 Dads aged 35-45, the most important thing we looked for in our cottage search was a relaxing location with space for us all to get together, yet be able to take time out if required, and enough activities to ensure we had no need to go out. Having just spent the second year in a row, we're so happy with the place, we're ready to book in for next year already. There's 9 separate beds, including 3 doubles, a large open plan kitchen / dinner that more than caters for group meals and the open plan really comes in to it's own, leading in to the lounge area and french windows through to the balcony seating area overlooking the river. Downstairs has a utility room, which we've never required, but almost all of the lower floor is devoted to games room, including pool and snooker tables, bar football and table tennis - so plenty of group entertainment! Outside of the property, there's sufficient allocated parking for 3 cars, but as it's part of the boat area, there's plenty of additional space too. Two sides of the building are also available for mooring, or in our case, fishing from. All in all, it's a perfect group location, if you just want to hang out with friends or family.

Fantastic place for a family get together. Worked well for four generations. Plenty of space so we didn't feel on top of one another. Games room was a big hit and brought out some hidden snooker talents!

Three generations shared the house and it worked well for us. The games room was a real bonus and would really come into its own if the weather was bad.
