We wanted a cottage full of character and this is exactly what Holly Cottage gave us. Cosy, comfortable and very homely. The cottage is extremely well equipped, with everything you would require. The garden is the perfect place to sit in the sun and enjoy a coffee. The cottage is perfectly situated for exploring the surrounding area. The welcome pack was very much appreciated and added the personal touch from Alan. We will certainly return to Holly Cottage and will be recommended to our friends and family.

Our holiday was spoilt for us when we entered the cottage to find that dogs were restricted to the ground floor only and could not be left at all. Our dog is used to sleeping upstairs in his own bed and was distressed at being left alone downstairs. Also it would have been nice to be able to have left him alone for an hour to go for a meal at the pub. As we do at home. Having taken dogs to many holiday venues where they have been dog friendly rather than dog tolerant we found these restrictions unnecessary. We booked the whole cottage for all of us including the dog. We took time to look for a cottage that claimed to be dog friendly and read on the website one well behaved dog only - there were no other restrictions mentioned. We have always shown respect for the premises we have hired, made sure that our dog behaved and always cleaned up before leaving. We would not have booked holly cottage if we had known the restrictions beforehand and would think twice before booking through you again.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Unfortunately this guest failed to read the standard terms and conditions issued throughout the booking process by his booking agency cottages.com. Despite his comments, we have always welcomed one well-behaved dog without any issues. Indeed we are responsible dog owners ourselves and appreciate the needs of individual dog owners; however we are also mindful of our many loyal returning guests who appreciate a holiday cottage without any trace of a pet having been present in in the property especially in the bedrooms. Our housekeeping scores on cleanliness confirm this to be the case. Incidentally when greeting these guests on arrival they were also advised that the village pub is also dog friendly. I have respectfully suggested to this guest in private correspondence that in future he studies the standard booking terms and conditions of all the holiday letting agencies in order to avoid disappointment when renting any holiday cottage.

We stayed at Holly Cottage at the end of January and had excellent walking weather for wintertime, cold, dry and sunny. The cottage is beautifully kept and presented and has everything you need for a perfect home from home. Upon arrival, Alan (the owner) met us in the cottage and had already prepared and lit the open fire; it was very cosy and snug and such a friendly welcome. Alan is a walking guide and told us a lot about the area and some of the best walks to do. Alan's welcome goodies pack of local cheese and ale was a nice touch. The cottage is in the pretty village of Bellerby, well positioned to tour the Dales from. There's some excellent walking locally. As well as enjoying days out in Wensleydale we also headed to Coverdale and Swaledale. After a daily hike out and about we would quench our thirst and enjoy a few of the local Wensleydale ales perfectly kept at the Cross Keys Inn just a short stroll (too close!) from the cottage. Roger, Anita and Guinness (our Collie).

Delightful old cottage but with all the amenities you would need. Loved the open fire and character features. Would recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing break in a traditional cottage within a lovely Yorkshire village. Special mention to owner Alan for his hospitality and welcome.

It was very small upstairs, the bathroom in particular with a high step up to the shower. The kitchen was nice, however the lounge could do with a refresh but still keep the character and would benefit enormously from a wood burner as the fire is quite smokey. This isn't a complaint at all but some constructive advice. We enjoyed our stay and the area particularly Middleham and also half a day hiring an electric bike from Leyburn.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your advice. As mentioned in a recent response to a previous review, we did experience damage to the chimney during a violent thunderstorm. It has since been repaired & swept since your visit. As for upstairs, this is a 300 year property and is typical of a traditional Yorkshire Dales Cottage in a conservation area. These features are the reason for its popularity. I am delighted you were still able to enjoy your holiday.

This is a really beautiful place to holiday. The cottage is pretty and so well equipped for your stay, we didn't want for anything. The welcome we reserved was very warm and the welcome cheese and local ale were much appreciated. Would thoroughly recommend this cottage to anyone.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner: many thanks Julia for your comments, which are very much appreciated. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at Holly Cottage and look forward to welcoming you back again to the Yorkshire Dales.
