Description

Courtyard cottage on estate of historic clan Douglas, with woodland walks from the door and Southern Upland Way close by.

Enjoying an idyllic situation on the 33,000-acre Douglas Estate, surrounded by open countryside and panoramic views, these three attached holiday cottages, set within a courtyard, have been renovated and furnished to a 5 star standard and provide excellent accommodation from which to explore the surrounding areas. Woodland walks are available direct from the door, and the Southern Upland Way, Scotland’s coast to coast long distance walk, runs close by. It is an ideal base for hill walking, fishing, wildlife and bird-watching, sightseeing or one of the many country estate pursuits available locally. Nearby Biggar has an array of specialist shops, pubs, eateries, Victorian-style puppet theatre, museums, boating and paddling pools, tennis courts and the famous Hogmanay bonfire and street party. Within easy reach are the cities of Edinburgh, with Scotland’s most famous castle dominating the city skyline, world-class museums, galleries, restaurants and bars, and Glasgow, a vibrant bustling city and home to the Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera. Shops 7 miles, pub 2 miles.

This was a 4 night break after a hectic 9 days visiting family in Staffordshire. It could not have been better, everything you could want. I stayed in beech cottage in March with my sisters so new what to expect. We will be back again and again.

We loved the location for visiting tourist attractions and walking the dog. The furnishings (other than the sofa) were impressive and wished we could have taken the comfortable beds home with us! During the stay the radiator in the bedroom was stuck on at full. Communications with the estate were limited due to the lack of mobile reception and the estate office land line being on constant answer machine. The emergency contact number was available on Whats App but the operator was on a day off therefor I felt embarrassed using it. Unfortunately it wasn't fixed during our stay, making the room too hot at night. Surprised to find another visitors trainers at the bottom of the bedroom curtains.

Nicely furnished cottage. Kitchen equipment not as good as in other cottages we rented before. Especially the cheap frying pans: you need special pans for this kind of hob (these ones hardly touched the ceramic plates).

We had a great holiday and would definitely go back again. The cottage was really well equipped and spacious. We enjoyed walking around the cottage but were close enough to visit Glasgow, Edinburgh and coastal town of Ayr so was a perfect mix.
