Description

A single storey converted stable with woodburner and period features located at the end of a farm track alongside three other charming cottages.

Surrounded by dramatic scenerySurrounded by dramatic scenery

Featuring beams taken from shipwrecks on the Cumbrian Coast, this small group of holiday cottages at Birkerthwaite, a former 17th century Lakeland farmstead, lie at the end of an unmade track and are surrounded by tranquil moorland scenery and farmland. This is fantastic walking countryside and the elevated position gives views of Scafell and the Eskdale Valley, creating a unique atmosphere of tranquillity. Birkerthwaite Farmhouse (W43001) is a unique holiday property dating back to 1627 and has many original features, beamed ceilings, flagged floors and unusual oak wall cupboards built in the 1700’s. Comfortably furnished and with the benefit of an open fire and an Aga, the farmhouse is cosy and welcoming. Birkerthwaite Stable (W41477) is a single-storey converted stable with rustic charm heated by a log-burning stove. Birkerthwaite Barn (W41478) has a spacious kitchen/dining room, a galleried landing and a four poster bed. Birkerthwaite Cottage (W41479) has an upstairs open plan living area with wooden floors which opens onto a balcony overlooking gardens. Nearby attractions include Muncaster Castle and Hardknott Roman Fort, whilst the Langdale Pikes and Ambleside on the northern shores of Lake Windermere can be reached via a stunning drive over the Hard Knott and Wrynose Passes. A short drive away is Wast Water; to the west are sandy beaches. Alternatively take the steam train from Ravenglass. Shop 3 miles, pub 2.5 miles.

All on ground floor: Living room with patio door, beams and slate floor/dining room/step to kitchen. Step to 1 double bedroom. Bathroom with shower attachment and toilet.

Woodburner in living room included. Electricity and bed linen included. DVD and small library. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washing machine. Fridge/freezer. Patio and furniture. Parking (1 car). Natural water supply from spring. No smoking.

We stayed here for three nights early November, views were lovely, so isolated, wildlife everywhere. If you want the shop you'll need to travel a few miles, however this is something we knew and expected, it met the need for us over the fireworks weekend. It was lovely to arrive and have a lovely warm fire lit and welcoming. I have just a few criticisms about the stable, it was not as clean as we would have liked, nothing there to clean work surfaces up etc. There was a film of tacky stuff / dust on the things in the kitchen area. The web page did state a freezer, not in the cottage, there was an ice box in the fridge, the door was broke. It would be difficult should you have brought food stuff for more days and need to use a freezer. The oven although not as clean as I would like work so well and was very efficient. The bed linen had an unpleasant odour, however clean, needs new pillows. We had brought our own so quite pleased about that. The floor is stone, quite easy to clean, had there been a mop etc to do it. The settee cushions has not been lifted and cleaned for some time and remnants of food stuff etc under them. Postitively, so warm and plenty of fuel to use, cosy and quite a retreat. I do take into concideration the location of the cottage and getting staff to keep the cottage to a cleaner standard might be difficult.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments. We are glad you enjoyed the welcoming cosy fire, the ample supply of fuel and the views from the property. I am sorry that you found the kitchen area dusty and tacky. We have a very dedicated cleaner and caretaker and it is almost unheard of for us to have comments about cleanliness so I have asked her to go up straight away and investigate this and investigate this puzzling odour of the bedding. You are correct there is no freezer and the cottage is so tiny that there is nowhere to put one but I will make sure this is amended in the details and hope it didn’t spoil your weekend too much. Thank you again for your comments.

We loved the location and the views from the stable. It was a cosy cottage and having the log fire on at night was lovely.

As a person with mobility problems, l found assess through gates and steps within the cottage difficult at times. Younger couples would be fine.

This is a fantastic place to stay if you love true peace and quiet (no mobile signal!!!) and nature all around you. The stable is quite isolated but that's why we love it. It has lots of character and the log burner is perfect after a day out in the hills. The views are extraordinary and the walking is fantastic. Be prepared to use the car for pretty much everything except a maybe few local walks e.g around Devoke Water or a trip down to Boot on foot (about an hour down hill then back up!). You need to take everything you need, however Tescos online do deliver food here . We've just come back from our second stay, had a really brilliant holiday and are thinking of booking again.

Small quaint barn conversion, way off the beaten track which has stunning views down to Eskdale. Quite small and being remote lacks some home comforts. Garden/ Patio is tiny making taking a large dog somewhat cramped. Heating is via wood burning stove and you need it to keep the damp at bay. If you are looking for remoteness and don't mind a bit of basic living then this cottage will be fine for you.

Beautiful little cottage in the middle of nowhere which is exactly what we wanted. Just big enough for 2 adults and out little dog. Everything you needed for a wonderful stay. Plenty of walks from the doorstep and not too far to drive to the nearest pub - about 10 mins.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner: We are sorry you felt a little cramped with your large dog in Birkerthwaite Stable. As you say, it is a very small rustic cottage and we hope that is reflected in the price. It is ideal for those who enjoy peace and quiet keeping the wood burner going. A limitless supply of fuel is provided.

This place is very special; beautiful position, perfect for walkers, absolutely private, peaceful, relaxing. Can't imagine a better place to stay if you want an unfussy, comfortable, glorious walking holiday in the Lakes.

Cottage was fine and very remote. Fire was a problem and I was very cold on several nights.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are sorry you felt cold. What a pity you didn’t let us know! The caretaker would have shown you how to bank up in the wood burner in the morning before you go out so that it is lovely and cozy when you return. Always call if there are any problems!
