English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Dating back 200 years, this grand detached country house, has open fire, multi-fuel burners and chandeliers. Symonds Yat is easily reached.

This grand detached country house is set within 2 acres of attractive gardens, beautifully presented with formal lawn, walled garden, arboretum and pretty rosebeds. The holiday property dates back 200 years and is full of character, with an open fire, multi-fuel burners, beams and chandeliers, and has been tastefully decorated by its current owners, who live next to the grounds.
This lavish retreat is an ideal location from which to explore the surrounding rolling countryside and the many villages with black-and-white timbered houses and inns. The nearby market town of Ross-on-Wye has many historic buildings and public cliff-top gardens offering excellent views of the River Wye, and Hereford is well worth a visit, with its cathedral (which contains the famous Mappa Mundi and Chained Library), museums, art galleries and bustling mid-week market.
Also enjoy our national heritage in Monmouth, a Tudor border town associated with Henry V. Or visit Hay-on-Wye, famous for its books and festivals. Close by is Kilpeck Church, perhaps the best preserved Norman church in the country. Symonds Yat offers everything from gentle rambles to canoeing within its magnificent natural setting, or join the network of pathways comprising the Wye Valley walk. Shop 2 miles, pub serving excellent food, 600 yards.

A stunning property, well-equipped but maybe in need of an upgrade in respect of the heating and some of the bathroom decor and facilities. Having paid a lot for the property, felt a bit cheated that there was a supplement for heating and that logs were not provided or readily available for the fire.

Clean, comfortable and well located. Interesting, large and well equipped house with an impressive selection of books to get you through wet days. Would definitely return.

A fabulous place for our church Homegroup weekend away. Bellevue is superbly equipped, very comfortable and the owners are lovely. Everything was well prepared, neat, tidy and clean. As a large group we did not feel on top of each other as there is plenty of space. We had a great walk to a local pub and some enjoyed looking round Hereford. It is excellent value for money. We would certainly come again if the numbers in our party matched the accommodation on offer.

Bellevue is spacious and worked for our party of 15 people including two small children. It is a good base from which to explore the surrounding areas. In the house: The kitchen is well equipped. We loved using the Aga (only available in winter) and range cooker and it was generally the favoured place to gather and serve meals. Beds were ok, a bit on the soft side but clean and cosy. There are TVs in some of the bedrooms and both lounges, however, they are too small for such big rooms. Clean and spacious bathrooms. The bath towels were small but clean and white. The house generally is rather busy. Whilst there are some interesting objects around, it is over-crowded with ornaments, knick-knacks, pictures and books – less would definitely be more. The little notices all over with instructions and an extraordinarily long list of dos and don’ts, as well as a terse checkout reminder, received the day before departure did little to create a welcoming atmosphere. The information/instruction folder contained a note that “children are welcome…. But the house is not child proof” We had to put ornaments out of reach of the little ones but there are very strict instructions to put everything back where they belong – difficult to remember when there are so many. Even though we paid the winter fuel allowance, we had no control over the heating and to change the settings the owner has to access the property to do that. The internet access is virtually non-existent, even when only one person is connected. How it can be advertised as having free Wi-Fi is puzzling. Even though the house features two wood burners and an open fire, we got the impression their use was not overly encouraged. No welcoming wood pile and the door of one of the stoves doesn’t even fully open. Lastly, we arranged for medical equipment to be delivered but as usual, exact delivery times cannot be guaranteed. We asked if anyone would be around within the 2 hour time slot advised but the answer was no. This is fair enough but no alternative arrangements were offered. Luckily the front porch had been left unlocked and the technician was able to place the equipment there. The owners were also most insistent that the equipment be removed before vacating the property. Once again, this is difficult to arrange before a 10 am departure on a Saturday morning. Very unhelpful to say the least. Fortunately, the person requiring the equipment went home before the Saturday so we could arrange the pickup before we left. Overall we did not find Bellevue as relaxing and inviting as advertised but we still enjoyed the week and spending time away with family.
