English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Guests at Daubeneys Shippon can relax in the living room next to the wood burner whilst looking out across the garden!

These attractive holiday properties lie in the peaceful conservation village of Colerne, surrounded by rolling countryside. The Grade II* listed stable conversion (PFFH) is part of the only longhouse in Wiltshire and dating back to the 13th century, is the oldest house in the village. Beautifully refurbished to offer all modern conveniences, yet retains charm and character. Sympathetically converted, the detached, single-storey barn (PHHF) offers light and airy, contemporary accommodation. Colerne has a good selection of shops and pubs but only a short bus journey, 7 miles, will take you into Bath and Chippenham. Within easy reach of Bristol, Bradford-on-Avon and the much-filmed villages of Lacock and Castle Combe. Great area for walking. Shop 200 yards, family pub and restaurant 10 yards.

Living/dining room with vaulted ceiling, wood-burning stove and patio doors leading to own garden. Well-equipped kitchen area. Double bedroom with patio doors leading to another garden. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Wooden floor and beams throughout.

Really lovely property, brilliantly located with lovely welcome surprises and friendly owners. It was just me, my infant and my dog and it was really safe and warm for both of them whilst being a bright and airy property. It was also a pleasant surprise how centrally located in Colerne the property was - I thought that on the pictures it seemed fairly remote but, although set back a decent way from the main street, you could easily walk to the shop/to the local pub for dinner etc. The only thing I would say (which didn't affect me at all) would be that if you were going for a romantic weekend with a partner you might feel cosier/more exclusive staying in the stables property which is just across the way. Otherwise it is simply fabulous and I cannot wait to come stay again!

The main reason we picked this cottage was described as dog safe and it was not.So easy for dog to get out of gate and you are reliant on people in other cottage to close gate.there was no privacy at all had to keep very fine window dressings closed. The pub was very noisy with karaoke on two nights and the double bed was very uncomfortable so we had to sleep in single beds .we have stayed in quite a few cottages and all have lived up to descriptions but although it was clean and adequate it certainly was not deserving of gold .I think when describing this cottage you should make it clear it is not the only cottage in the grounds and if you want a private dog friendly cottage don't pick this one.

This is potentially a lovely holiday cottage, that is let down my the small things that can really make or break your experience. For example, whilst the building looks lovely as you first walk in and is decorated nicely etc, we felt it could have been cleaner (lots of cobwebs around the place etc). Perhaps it is a little fussy, but I was also disappointed with the shower. When I go away for a break I like to look forward to a standard of fixtures that are better than what I have at home. The cottage had a rain shower which produced a very low pressure and just was a bit underwhelming. A small thing I know, but these are the things that can make a place really enjoyable. We were travelling with our six month old baby, who creates a lot of washing. We therefore needed to use the washing machine quite a bit and found it didnt get things clean, not did the water ever get hot. Again, this is a simple thing to get right, but quite annoying for guests if it is not working properly. The owner, Melanie, was helpful and organised, but a little more professionalism would improve the experience. For example when I rang to arrange key collection she answered the phone without stating the business name, and when we arrived we were slightly bombarded with information and questions as we were unpacking the car. Whilst this was well meaning, it would have been nice to settle in a bit first. More positively, the cottage is warm and generally very comfortable. The decor is good and the whole place was well appointed with everything you might need. Whilst the cottage is very close to the owners' house and the general situation in the ground of the main house is very pleasant. As dog owners we were a little un-nerved about being reliant on other guests to shut the main gain leading to the road, and would have preferred the cottage's garden to be fully enclosed. Bedding and towels etc were good quality and very clean. There was lots of information provided on local attractions, transport etc which was well thought-out and nicely presented. We lit the wood-burner one night which was lovely, and everything to do so was provided which we liked. We also appreciated the food/drink supplies that were provided. Overall, with a few tweaks the place could be excellent, but as is, I would not stay here again. Admittedly, the things that bothered us may not bother other guests at all!
