If you want a holiday with incredible beauty, wildlife, cultural heritage, National Trails, festivals and pretty spa and market towns Mid Wales is for you. Recently the Brecon Beacons has been designated an International Dark Sky reserve so great for nocturnal animals and star gazers too! There’s a fabulous choice of self-catering accommodation across the region so you can choose to be near a town or village or much more rural if you want to get away from it all. Look out for red kites, the Official Bird of Wales which was once on the brink of extinction, a visit to the Gigrin Red Kite Feeding Centre offers a rare glimpse into its natural habitat.
There are many annual events and festivals in the county the most famous perhaps being the literary and arts festival in Hey-on-Wye. Music lovers need to head for the Brecon Jazz Festival or the Green Man in Glanusk Cardigan/Ceredigion and the beautiful Cardigan Bay in West Wales are known for their stunning scenery and wildlife. The town is a gateway to the Teifi Valley and the Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire Coastal Paths. It remains unspoilt with a rich history, thriving culture of arts and crafts plus annual events and music festivals. You can watch dolphins in the bay, take a walk along the coast and do some bird watching, or sample the local traditional food and drink.
The largest county in Wales is the ‘Ancient Kingdom of Powys running from Snowdonia in the north, the Cambrian Mountains in the west to the Brecon Beacons in the south. It’s the least populated county in Wales so perfect if you want to relax and unwind in one of the many holiday cottages. Most of the region is hilly with lush green scenery and a great variety of flora and fauna to discover. Must see attractions include Powis Castle and Gardens, Lake Vyrnwy and Ellan Valley reservoirs and take a ride on the Cambrian or Heart of Wales railway. For the walkers there are the Glyndwr’s Way and Offa’s Dyke National Trails taking in magnificent scenery. If you fancy a day underground head for Dan-yr-Ogof, the National Showcaves Centre for Wales.
