Piedmont

The region of Piedmont is in northwest Italy and borders France and Switzerland. As its name suggests it sits at the foot of many mountains and is surrounded on 3 sides by the Alps with the highest peaks and largest glaciers in Italy and has a great selection of self-catering holiday villas.

This is the second largest region in Italy and arguably the most elegant, well known for its sophisticated cuisine and wines with a strong French influence. Many trips to the region start in the capital Turin which, as well as being famous for football and fiats, boasts baroque architecture and the monumental landmark Mole Antonellians with its soaring spire. Visit the Automobile Museum or the Egyptian Museum displaying archaeological and anthropological collections.

The mountains and valleys in the summer months offer fabulous trekking routes with various levels of difficulty including some parts of the spectacular Via Alpina. The mountains are also very popular with mountain bikers and cyclists who like a challenge! There are national parks and nature reserves all over the region; one in particular is the Gran Paradiso National Park with glaciers, natural lakes and protected flora and flora.

For a more relaxing day out venture along the River Po and into Vercilli with a varied landscape covered by vines, woods and vast plains criss-crossed by rivers. The region is one of Europe’s leading rice producers with many reserves and wetlands so great for birdwatching. There is also an Alpine park that extends out to Mount Rosa.

In winter the region is home to internationally renowned ski resorts such as Sestriere or Val di Susa offering downhill and cross country skiing, ice-skating and snowboarding, winter walking and climbing plus rafting in wild white water rivers. Don’t miss visiting medieval castles such as the famous Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, found in Turin and the surrounding countryside, and the Sacri Monti. All over the region you will find art and history, historic villages and towns to be discovered at every turn. The famous spa resorts of Acqui Terme and Vinado offer therapies and treatments to make you feel wonderful, relaxed and revived.

If that’s not enough look out for internationally acclaimed cultural events and food festivals, perhaps try the famous Palio horse race of Asti, the oldest bareback horse race with medieval origins going back to the 13th century. We could go on forever about what to do and see in Piedmont but the best thing to do is come and see for yourself!
