Somerset Cottages

Somerset, in the South West of England, borders Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. This rural county is defined by a landscape of rolling hills. Somerset has been civilised since the Palaeolithic period. Archaeological remains from the Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods offer visitors a rich history to be discovered. Tourists can venture to sites such as Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves, as well as Glastonbury Tor and Abbey, and the Victorian seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare.

There is a wealth of archaeological conservation to be found in this part of South West England. The Palaeolithic caves of the limestone Mendip Hills are popular with visitors. Gough’s Cave, located in Cheddar Gorge, dates to 12,000 BC and contains the complete skeletal remains of Cheddar Man who lived there in 7150 BC. History enthusiasts will enjoy visiting nearby Glastonbury. Cadbury Castle, formerly known as Camelot, is the Iron Age fort associated with the legend of King Arthur’s castle and court of Camelot. The city of Bath, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, should not be missed. Bathe in naturally hot spa water, visit the magnificent 18th-century Royal Crescent, and take advantage of the outstanding shopping and dining opportunities.

Visit Somerset and enjoy incredible countryside views, superb sandy beaches, and tasty cider and Cheddar cheese. Somerset boasts 11,500 listed buildings, and a number of monuments, conservation areas, National Trust sites, heritage locations, parks and gardens. For outdoor recreation, Exmoor National Park and the South West Coast are easily accessed by bicycle. There are many charming towns to visit, such as Crewkerne, which has numerous antique shops and a wide selection of fine eateries.
