The River Tay is the largest river in Britain and attracts anglers from all over the world who come to catch magnificent Atlantic salmon. Scone Palace to the north of Perth offers 6 miles of fishing amidst gently rolling farmland and picturesque countryside with forty pools along its length. Both fly fishing and spinning are available and each beat is equipped with a comfortable fishing hut and a small motor boat. This is a perfect place to fish and the non-fishers can discover the palace which has an exciting and colourful history surrounded by stunning grounds. Perth is Scotland’s newest city and a joy to explore on foot with many fine restaurants, cafes and pubs to meet up to discuss the ‘catch of the day. It also boasts a great selection of fishing holiday cottages in Perthshire.

Loch Faskally, close to Pitlochry which is a perfect place to choose holiday cottages with fishing in Perthshire, is stunning and between 2 hills making it very sheltered. The loch is 4km long and at the dam end there is a fish ladder and public viewing gallery to see salmon leaping between April and October. This is a great day out for all the family and the anglers can catch trout and salmon plus do a bit of wildlife spotting, eagles, kingfishers, otters and deer to name but a few. There is also a boating centre if you want to venture out on the loch. Victorian Pitlochry is delightful and a lovely place to visit, surrounded by mountains it is a good starting place for many walkers, others can enjoy impressive architecture, floral displays and independent shops, cafes and bars. There is salmon, sea trout and grayling fishing on the River Earn which runs through Crieff which is a lively county town set amidst the magnificent Perthshire landscape, perfect for those not quite so hooked on fishing. Drummond Fishery, at Comire has several pools heavily stocked with rainbow trout -fantastic for children and beginners to angling as you are almost certain of success! Nearby Loch Earn is very popular with boat and bank anglers.

The whole area should be top of your places to visit; we have barely scratched the surface and haven’t even mentioned places like Gleneagles of golfing fame but also with a great choice of castles and historic attractions to please everyone. Blairgowrie is one of the largest towns in the county and sits on the banks of the splendid River Ericht. Now is the time to book a self-catering cottage and come and see for yourself!
