Islands are always ideal for a seaside holiday, and the beautiful Isle of Skye is a particularly idyllic one. Beautiful countryside, including the majestic Cuillen Mountains and spectacular seaside panoramas, will ensure a holiday on Skye is one to remember. One of our coastal cottages will provide a comfortable home from home experience as you explore everything this island has to offer.
The beautiful coastline features inlets and bays covered in soft white sand. Braes Beach is one of the most popular, with its sheltered beachfront and nearby caves and sea stacks perfect for exploring.
Climbers flock to Skye for the unique challenges the island offers. Sligachan makes a convenient base for experienced climbers who want to take on the challenge of the Cuillen, Skye’s magnificent mountain peaks. However, there is also plenty for less experienced climbers and ramblers to enjoy, and the towering coastal cliffs are an exhilarating spot for coasteering.
While walks and cycle rides will take you to some beautiful sites, to truly appreciate the sea stacks, natural arches, caves and sheer cliffs of Skye, take to the waves. Sailing boats and sea kayaks can be hired in several places to view the island in this way, or head out on a boat tour to spot colonies of sea birds and marine wildlife.
Across the island are fascinating remains of the past. Visit the brochs, dry-stone circular buildings over two thousand years old. Dunvegan Castle is the ancestral home of the chiefs of clan McLeod for the past 800 years. You can visit the castle and the water gardens, as well as take a trip on Loch Dunvegan to visit the seal colony and its playful inhabitants.
The village of Portree is the largest on the island. The attractive port has plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants. Visit the pier for a variety of boat tours, including trips to glimpse the rare sea eagles, or stay ashore and stroll the many stunning walks nearby. A popular one is to the Old Man of Storr, a pinnacle of rock that can be seen for miles.
Many of the menus of the pubs and restaurants on the island reflect the fresh, local produce available, including plenty of seafood. Don’t forget to sample Talisker, one of the finest Scottish whiskies from the oldest working distillery on the island.
