Lombardy in Northern Italy is most famous for its beautiful lakes which can be found close to the Swiss border, north of Milan; a place of tranquillity, stunning scenic beauty of mountains and lakes, and genteel resorts. For accommodation in this famous region of Italy see our selection of villas in the Italian Lakes.

This region is home to Milan, the regional capital as well as, Lake Maggiore and Lake Como (For Lake Garda see our Veneto region). These picturesque lakes attract visitors year round who come to holiday and relax by the lakes, enjoy leisurely boating trips, visit exotic gardens and explore the region''s many historic cities and sites.

Lake Como is surrounded by rich vegetation and romantic lakeside villas. There are good walking routes in the mountainous hinterland and of course plenty of opportunities for relaxing boat rides. Lake Maggiore is Italy’s longest lake and is renowned for its exotic plants and gardens which line the lakeside and is the perfect place for a relaxing break. Lake Garda is the largest lake of the three; its narrow northern end enclosed by dramatic mountains.

Explore the narrow winding roads at your own pace, taking you around the lakes through pretty villages and old world resorts and up into the hills and mountains close to the Swiss border.

And if you have time maybe explore Milan and Bergamo. Milan is a sophisticated city with ancient churches and art galleries as well as a wonderful cathedral. The focal point is the Piazza del Duomo and close by is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza della Scala with its famous opera house. There’s some great shopping to be had as well as plenty of relaxing bars and cafes.

To the north east of Milan is Bergamo, comprising of two parts; Bergamo Bassa, the city centre and Bergamo Alta, the medieval part of the city, which has narrow steep streets surrounded by 16th century walls. A funicular railway connects the ‘two cities’.

For more day out ideas why not take a trip to some of the area''s UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Monte San Giorgio, just over the Swiss border or see the Rock Drawings of Valcamonica to the east of Bergamo.

Sampling the local cuisine is a great way to get a feel for the flavour of this beautiful party of Italy - it is from here that the famous ''Risotto alla Milanese'' hails, or try some of the region''s cheeses which include grana padano, gorgonzola and taleggio.

This region of Italy provides for a relaxing holiday set amongst most beautiful scenery. Enjoy its unique atmosphere that has a lovely mix of Italian, French and Austrian influences.
