Budding chefs and foodies can’t get enough of Emilia Romagna, locally known as the home of Italian cooking. This is where you will find the world’s finest parmesan cheese, prosciutto and balsamic vinegar (which is only produced in Modena and Reggio Emilia), as well as classic dishes like spaghetti Bolognese (which was said to have been created in the city of Bologna). The region has also produced some of Italy’s most celebrated wines, such as Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and the ubiquitous Lambrusco.
On a balmy evening, there is no greater pleasure than dining ‘al fresco’ at a villa with a private pool, with a carafe of local wine and a plate full of local delicacies, watching the sun set over the Appenine Mountains. Once you’ve experienced this region for yourself, you will understand why many of the world’s top chefs and sommeliers make their own pilgrimage to the region year after year.
In between meals, there is plenty to see and do around the area. The city of Bologna is a bustling yet charming place which is full of history and culture. Bologna is a UNESCO City of Music, thanks to its long tradition of opera, classical and jazz music – you can learn more about this at the stunning International Museum and Library of Music, which houses some of Europe’s oldest musical instrument.
For a flavour of traditional Italian life, choose a holiday villa with a pool near the Romanesque towns of Modena or Ferrara – the winding streets and crumbling stone facades have barely changed over the past 2000 years.
Or head to the coast where you can really make the most of a villa with a swimming pool, away from the busy beach resorts and lidos.
Villas with pools in Emilia Romagna offer a truly immersive experience in a part of Italy which deserves to be savoured.
