Sitting on the banks of the River Corrib, Galway City’s bright lights and vibrant lifestyle make it a very popular tourist destination. Known as Ireland’s “Cultural Heart”, Galway City boasts a large number of music venues and theatres that regularly host the best musicians and performers in the country. The city is also host to a large number of festivals, celebrations and events throughout the year.
Visit Connemara, the “most Irish” part of Ireland in so many ways. The area is a bastion of the traditional culture and language of the Irish people, with one of the largest Irish-speaking Gaeltacht areas in the country, where villages such as Carraroe offer stony beaches and Galway Hooker boat racing. Connemara’s main town is Clifden, and this is a great starting point for exploring the megalithic tombs that surround the town. For nature lovers, Connemara National Park boasts bogs, heaths, forests and grasslands, as well as 19th century graveyard and megalithic tombs that date back 4,000 years.
Located near the western shore of Lough Corrib, the village of Oughterard is a quaint village with a castle, prime fishing and a picturesque bridge that served as a setting in the film The Quiet Man.
Off the west coast in Galway Bay lie the Aran Islands. The three islands – Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer – are limestone, just like the Burren of County Clare, and the unusual climate and ground consistency allows a wide variety of plants to grow there, including arctic, Mediterranean and alpine plants. The islands are also home to some of the oldest archaeological remains in the country, including Dun Aoghasa and Dun Chonchuir.
