The Stewart Family have been farming in Falside since the 1930s and began making cheese in 1998. Given that the team are members of Scotland Food & Drink, the Specialist Cheese Makers Association, the Fine Cheese Makers of Scotland, Food from Fife, the Scottish Cheese Trail and VisitScotland (4-star Visitor attraction), they’re well worth the trip when in the region.

If you’re looking for local-produce, why not visit the Welbeck Estate, situated within Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. Its farm shop stocks Stichelton, an English blue cheese made from raw milk, which is produced on-site at the Stichelton Dairy. The Estate is home to many local suppliers, with two-thirds of the shop’s product range sourced from, or prepared within, the historic 15,000 acre location. Once you’ve stocked up your kitchen, why not indulge in some culture with a visit to The Harley Gallery, home to the Estate’s own Portland Collection of fine and decorative art as well as a number of contemporary exhibitions.

A beautiful location, nestled on the northern edge of the New Forest, Lyburn Farm makes a variety of different handmade cheeses, all of which are made from their own dairy cows. Unlike most cheddars, Lyburn’s are softer and more continental in style. Tours at Lyburn in 2017 are on July 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th and 12th.

If you want to find out more about how cheese is produced, why not visit Monkland working dairy in Herefordshire? Producers of local artisan cheeses, it offers guided tours which last about half an hour, or for the real enthusiast, book a ‘Cheese Experience Day’. Led by one of the expert cheesemakers, you will learn more about the production process from start to finish and make your own small cheese, which the dairy will mature and then post out to you once ready.

The Devon-based Quicke family have been making cheese for five centuries and their range of cheddars are sold in the farm’s on-site shop. A two-hour tour is available Monday to Friday throughout the year (advance bookings are recommended), which gives you the opportunity to learn more about the history of the farm as well as visiting the milking parlour and exploring the store where the cheddars are matured. You’ll also get a chance to sample some of the produce and enjoy a drink in the Farm Kitchen. Quicke’s also has plenty of events throughout the year so be sure to visit the website for details.
