For many years a magnet for painters, writers and tourists from all over the world you will be pleased to know there is a fabulous choice of fishing cottages in Provence. With a wonderful climate this is an all year round fishing destination and you will be delighted at just what there is on offer.
This is a gorgeous area of south-eastern France and extends from the banks of the Rhone River to the west, the Italian border to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. With a combination of lavender fields, lively coastal cities, cobbled streets in charming tranquil timeless villages it is hardly surprising it is loved and revisited by so many.
Many of the fishing holiday cottages in Provence have fishing nearby and by using the extensive feature list you can easily find your perfect gite or villa, perhaps with a private swimming pool, the choice really is yours.
The 36km long River Sorgue holds a prominent place in the life and history of this area and is a real challenge for fly fishing. The French national fly fishing team practise here and they are amongst the best in the world. The river is clear and beautiful and full of fish, plus you can canoe all the way from Fontaine to l’Isle sur la Sorgue or swim at Partage des Eaux.
To the west of Aix-en-Provence is Etang de Berre which is a lagoon and a wonderful fishing venue where you can cast in from the banks or take a boat out onto the vast expanse of water. Stay at nearby Martigues with a nice choice of holiday cottages with fishing in Provence. Aix-en-Provence is a vibrant lively town with a university founded 600 years ago, sunny squares filled with cafes and broad avenues lined with plane trees make it an idyllic place to meet up in the evening to discuss ‘the catch of the day’.
Avignon is an historical town not to be missed famous for its castle and ‘le Pont d’Avignon’ which only spans half the river. If you want to catch shad the Durance rivers famous weir called ‘Callet’ is the place to go and test your skills, they jump out like silver bullets and love to take a fly in the strong currents of this beautiful river.
The Camargue offers exceptional conditions for nature and fishing and is where the river Rhone, starting in Switzerland, empties into the Mediterranean Sea. The variety and type of fishing is endless, fresh water, brackish, saline, stagnant and flowing water, a real angler’s paradise. For the non-fishers you can spot the signature pink flamingos and take a horse ride through the waves as they lap onto the golden sands. You may even catch the famous mistral wind which blows down the Rhone Valley to the Mediterranean.
Provence won’t disappoint in fact you will be captivated, we haven’t even mentioned Carpentras, Montelimar, Salon-de-Provence or St Remy-de-Provence. By staying in your own self-catering gite or villa you will get the most from a holiday in this special part of France.
